‘9-1-1’ Creator Talks ‘Inspiration’ Behind That Big Ole Sinkhole

by Samantha Whidden

With the latest episode of 9-1-1 is set to reveal a major natural disaster, the hit series’ co-showrunner Kristen Reidel is ready to share more details about what viewers are expected to see.

While chatting about what really inspired the episode with TV Insider, the 9-1-1 co-showrunner stated, “Our inspiration here was really, have you ever wished the earth would open up and swallow you whole? Ok, now, what if it did?”

Reidel then noted that the rescue efforts from 9-1-1 character Bobby Nash (portrayed by Peter Krause) will definitely be tricky in this episode. “Because the oil well is now active, you’re not just pulling people out of a wrecked car. [They’re] trying to do it in incredibly slick conditions while also avoiding making any sparks because the air is full of methane.”

Reidel jokingly goes on to add that the latest 9-1-1 may actually be scary for some viewers. “We don’t have any creatures. But it does start at the DMV, which I think for a lot of people inspires a different kind of terror.”

Peter Krause Talks About His ‘9-1-1’ Character’s Personality

During a January 2021 interview with US Weekly, Peter Krause shared more details about the personality of his 9-1-1 character, Bobby Nash. “For my own self, I think that Bobby’s in a really good place. He’s able to be the papa bear to everybody at work. And Also be a good husband to Athena. A good friend to Michael. And a good stepdad.”

The 9-1-1 star then said that Bobby may actually be migrating towards his Parenthood character, Adam Braverman. He then talks about the relationship between Bobby and Athena. “Bobby’s certainly concerned about Athena after what she went through [in previous seasons]. She is returning [to] work and Bobby’s a little bit of a worrywart when it comes to Athena’s well-being.”

He also described the duo as being the mama bear and papa bear of the 9-1-1 family.

Oliver Stark Claims That ‘9-1-1’ Gives Him a Level of Security

While chatting with Nerds and Beyond in 2020, Oliver Stark claimed that 9-1-1 provided him something that he thinks is quite rare as an actor. A level of security. “You know, something that takes with a pinch of salt. As it could go away at any moment. I’m very aware of that in the world of TV.”

Stark also described 9-1-1 as being a really nice environment for him to kind of take a moment of stability and just learn to enjoy it. “And kind of grow as an actor. As a person through the people that I get to work with.”
