Tis that 9-1-1 season of scrutinizing trailers to see if your favorite characters show up. Fans know they have a long wait for their questions to be answered.
Like, did Eddie (Ryan Guzman) really quit 9-1-1? Is he off the show or still on the Fox series working another job, albeit a safer one?
After last Monday’s 9-1-1 Christmas episode, the show released a video tease, with a frantic montage of what’s to come. It served as more of a reminder that sister show 9-1-1: Lone Star is kicking off season three, Jan. 3.
9-1-1 won’t return to your screens until March 21, so fans have a long wait for answers. But it appears that Guzman still will be on the show. TV Insider reported the news earlier this week. And Oliver Stark, who plays Buck, Eddie’s best friend, said as much in a new interview with Hello.
But here’s how it set up in the fall finale. Eddie is a single dad raising his son, Christopher. His estranged wife died a while back. Christopher, who is about 10, was having all sorts of problems leading up to Christmas. He told his dad he thought he’d be dead next holiday season.
So at the 9-1-1 Christmas gathering, Eddie tells Buck and Hen “I think I have to make a change. I’m leaving the 118.”
9-1-1 also has other major questions to answer in March. Like, where are Chimney and Maddie? The two characters were barely acknowledged in the Christmas episode. Maddie, suffering from post-partum depression, dropped off her baby daughter at the fire station in the season five premiere and took off for parts unknown. Chimney thinks Maddie is in Boston, but that plot point was dropped more than a month ago.
“I think it creates conflict for his character, where it’s a good thing [for Eddie and his son ] but is it the right choice?” Stark told the magazine. “I think one of the main things we get to see in (the rest of season five) is that Buck has a block when it comes to understanding why Eddie would want to do it long term.
“It comes from a place of wanting his partner by his side,” Stark said. “Buck will struggle, and won’t completely understand – but he will have to get used to it.”
Now, let’s circle back to the 9-1-1 tease, we see Bobby (Peter Krause) possibly acknowledging Eddie’s decision to leave.
“I’ve got some announcements to make,” he tells the team.
Then we see Athena (Angela Bassett). She repeats a line from the season five premiere: “The city can use all the heroes it can get,” Athena says.
Then the clip heads to Austin, Tx, for 9-1-1: Lone Star. Captain Owen Strand and the firefighters and paramedics will be dealing with a massive Texas winter storm when the season begins.
And Owen (Rob Lowe) says: “I don’t know if I can fix the world, but I’m going to try.”
