The players on the popular FOX procedural series 9-1-1 return to us each week as multiple exciting stories unfold. Of course, we do know the main players in the series, however, there was one victim who appeared more than once in the series as the 9-1-1 first responders were called to his aide.

With two calls to the 9-1-1 experts for one person may suggest the victim is prone to accidents or clumsiness. However, this is not the case for poor Darrell (Thomas Daniel Smith) a baggage handler at the Los Angeles airport.

Each of Darrell’s emergency injuries was due to the behaviors of careless coworkers. And, each time it is Darrell who steps in to save the day, with disastrous results – for Darrell in particular.

‘9-1-1’ Victim Is A True Hero

In the 9-1-1 third season episode titled “Christmas Spirit” Darrell comes to the aid of his coworkers and the public when one careless move by a fellow bag handler puts the public in danger.

This nearly deadly moment of poor judgment from Darrell’s coworker occurs as he is loading a cart with baggage.

As the cart fills with heavy luggage, Darrell’s coworker, Wade, decides he doesn’t need to get another cart for the overflow luggage pieces. Instead, he tries to jam it all in.

In doing so, Wade sets a set of golf clubs on the cart accelerator. Sending the cart on a deadly venture riding haywire across the tarmac.

The scene is comical, no doubt, as the cart flies past groups of people, spinning wildly as Tchaikovsky’s Nutcracker Suite plays in the background.

Darrell comes to the rescue when he drives another vehicle into the cart’s path. Hitting the wayward vehicle hard enough to topple it over, stopping the cart almost immediately.

Darrell and those around him celebrate the baggage handler’s heroic deed for a brief moment before tragedy strikes. In a shocking twist, a jet engine sucks Darrell in. Thankfully, he survives the harrowing ordeal when the 9-1-1 first responders come to his aide.

Reaching the ‘Breaking Point’

Then, Darrell is yet again injured in the 9-1-1 season four episode Breaking Point, as he comes to the rescue of a coworker.

Tired of the constant rudeness of passengers, a burnt-out flight attendant grabs a bottle of champaign and jumps onto the emergency slide, exiting the plane. Darrell watches these events unfold and comes to the aid of the flight attendant. However, as Darrell approaches, the champagne cork pops, lodging itself in Darrell’s throat.

9-1-1 heroes Hen (Aisha Hinds) and Chim (Kenneth Choi) treat Darrell; and once the cork is removed from his throat, Darrell decides he has reached his own breaking point and resigns almost immediately.
