‘9-1-1’: Two Main Characters Weren’t Even Mentioned in Winter Finale

by Suzanne Halliburton

9-1-1 went through its winter finale Monday night leaving fans of Maddie and Chimney with barely a holiday mention.

In fact, if not for a bummed out Buck, no one would even know that two major characters still were MIA on 9-1-1.

And heading into hiatus, their situation still is very much in the air. So 9-1-1 fans will have to wait until March 21, the next new episode, for another mention.

Here’s how 9-1-1 addressed the issue in Wrapped in Red, its Christmas episode that also ended the fall season. Buck (Oliver Stark) wasn’t very happy this Christmas. It didn’t feel right without his family. That’s it. That was the mention.

As 9-1-1 fans know by heart, Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) is Buck’s big sister. And Chimney is her husband. They obviously weren’t in Los Angeles to celebrate Christmas.

But 9-1-1 fans also know that Chimney (Kenneth Choi) is off in search of his wife. He has been for weeks. We think he’s gotten close. Problem is, 9-1-1 dropped the story line a month ago.

If you’ve followed the 9-1-1 season, you know that Maddie, a dispatcher, is suffering from postpartum depression. In the season five premiere in September, Maddie dropped baby Jee-Yun off at the 118 station. She left Chimney a video message, telling her husband “You don’t need to go to the police or come looking for me. I’m not in any danger and no one is making me do this. But Jee is not safe with me.”

Chimney, though, is desperate to find his wife. With help from Buck, Chimney figured out that Maddie probably is in Boston. That’s because Buck recognized the bells from a Boston church as he listened to one of Maddie’s phone calls. So Chimney and Jee are on a cross-country road trip. Buck believed that Maddie was happiest when she she lived in Boston, going to nursing school. She was married to Doug at the time. And although Doug was an abusive husband, when the two lived in Boston, they rarely saw each other because both were in school.

In the 9-1-1 episode, Nov. 8, Chimney is in Boston. He uses his paramedic training and helps with the rescue of a young boy in the back of a car. When the city paramedics got there, Chimney recognized one of them. It was his friend, Eli.

The two went out for drinks later that night. Chimney told Eli about Maddie. And Eli offered some advice: “Take a minute, take a breath and pull yourself together. When you do find her, you can be the Howie that she needs.” (Howie is another Chimney nickname).

So as far as anyone in 9-1-1 world knows, Chimney still is looking for Maddie. They received no answers Monday night.

But as for the holiday theme for the Christmas episode, 9-1-1 was on point. The 118 crew members ended up celebrating Christmas with folks they’d rescued the night before.
