‘9-1-1’: What Convinced Angela Bassett to Take Role of Athena Grant

When Angela Bassett took her “9-1-1” role as Athena Grant, the actress said it was out of respect and appreciation to the show’s creators who worked with her on another series.

Bassett talked with Deadline in 2018 about her experiences on “American Horror Story” and how it was easy to work the Fox first-responder drama. She’s produced the “9-1-1” show in addition to her acting duties since 2018.

The 63-year-old New York City native worked with Ryan Murphy, Brad Falchuck, and Tim Minear for four years on the hit FX show. She said she “was always very excited to start” with the show each year.

She liked playing four different characters on “American Horror Story” because it was “very intriguing, very different from something I had done before.”

“9-1-1” is in its fifth season and airs on Monday nights on Fox.

‘9-1-1’ Star Said Show’s Creators Appreciate Actresses

The Yale graduate has played in several big movies, winning an Academy Award nomination for playing legendary singer Tina Turner in the 1993 film “What’s Love Got to Do with It.” She’s won a Golden Globe Award and seven Primetime Emmy Awards.

But she had never played a cop before and put her trust in the show.

She knows Murphy, Falchuck and Minear “appreciate actresses — and mature actresses” and what they bring to the screen. She said she’s be “challenged and pulled an excited” about what the men brought to the “9-1-1” show.

Bassett said she wants to work with “great people” and “great content.” She appreciated the men’s knowledge of audience tastes, and it helped her have “faith” in the show. She also said she felt “9-1-1” would be “a good ride to take.” 

The actress is also taking on a role with the next Marvel “Black Panther” movie. The movie is titled “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and Bassett plays Queen Ramonda. In August, the film lost its star in Chadwick Boseman after a secret battle with Stage IV colon cancer. According to SYFY, the movie’s producers decided against bringing back Boseman with a body double and CGI trickery.

This new film will premiere on Nov. 11, 2022.

‘9-1-1’ Comes Off Sinkhole Story, Celebrates Christmas

Fans are still basking in fun from this past “Past Is Prologue” episode where Bobby and the 118 worked to rescue women stuck in a massive Los Angeles sinkhole. Bassett’s Grant character investigated a 30-year-old cold case involving a casino robbery in that same episode.

What’s in store for next Monday’s “Wrapped in Red” episode? A whole bunch of Christmas Eve emergencies and a Partridge in a Pear Tree? Probably. Also, Ryan Guzman’s Eddie struggles with an emotional Christopher, played by Gavin McHugh. Murphy, Falchuck, and Minear wrote the episode and
