Recently, we have seen her as Athena Grant, the fierce tough-as-nails police officer who will fight for what is right at whatever cost. But, long before Angela Bassett took on her memorable role on FOX’s hit first-responder drama, 9-1-1 she had made her name as one of the most formidable leading ladies in Hollywood.
A star power for which she has amassed a staggering $25 million net worth over the years.
9-1-1 fans love to watch Bassett as Athena Grant, a woman who will do anything to protect the city that she serves as well as a woman who will fight to the death to protect her loved ones. However, many of Bassett’s fans will also remember her well from some of Hollywood’s biggest blockbusters.
During her career, Angela Bassett has stepped onto the stage portraying iconic singer Tina Turner in What’s Love Got To Do With It, taken a turn playing Jackson family matriarch Katherine Jackson in The Jacksons: An American Dream, and led a generation of women into standing up for themselves as portraying Stella in How Stella Got Her Groove Back.
Bassett’s Moves From The Big Screen To Some Iconic Television Roles
In the early 2000s, Angela Bassett decided to try her hand in television roles. Her first starring role was as Rosa Parks in the award-winning 2002 television film, The Rosa Parks Story.
Following this role, Angela Bassett found her way into the iconic American Horror Story franchise. First leading the cast in American Horror Story: Coven.
Since then, the actress has had roles throughout the series’s run playing a variety of characters in American Horror Story’s Hotel, Roanoke, and Apocolypse.
In 2018, Angela Bassett took on a double role on 9-1-1. Acting as both producer of the series and as a star, playing the first responder, Athena Grant.
Athena Grant works as a field sergeant. When the series premiered, Grant was married to her longtime love Michael Grant. The couple has two children, May and Harry, together.
However, this marriage ended early in the series as Michael came out to his wife as being gay.
Initially, the couple tried to work things out within their marriage enough to stay together “for the children.”
However, this proved to do more harm than good. The couple’s daughter, May, began acting out in response to the troubles her parents were facing.
‘9-1-1’s’ Athena And Bobby
By season two of the hit FOX series, Athena was wed to fellow 9-1-1 first responder Bobby Nash.
While their story is certainly a 9-1-1 fan-favorite Athena Grant and Bobby Nash certainly have their ups and downs. Most recently, the couple was devastated when Athena’s son Harry was kidnapped by a man who was holding a grudge against Athena.
While in pursuit of the kidnapper, Athena was able to corner him. But not before he threatened to shoot Bobby on the spot.
In a heartwrenching moment, Athena made the split decision that she couldn’t risk the threat. And the officer shoots the criminal dead where he stood. It was a horrifying moment when the kidnapper died on the scene… Before he could reveal where he was keeping Harry.
Thankfully, with the help of the 9-1-1 first responder team and Harry’s father, Athena was able to track her son down and rescue him before any more harm could be done.
