The hit CBS drama, 9-1-1, returns in March 2022 and we’re ready for answers.
In the first part of the Season 5 finale, the 118 left us without answers to many big decisions. Is Eddie really leaving the team? What’s going on with Albert? Will Chimney forgive Buck after he kept the secret that he knew Maddie was leaving? What will happen with Maddie (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Chimney’s (Kenneth Choi) relationship?
When we last left the couple, Chimney and their baby, Jee-Yun, were on a mission to find Maddie and bring her back home to them.
Maddie had been struggling with postpartum depression. She’d been struggling to bond with her daughter, and constantly feeling like a failure as a mother. With Chimney on the job all the time, Maddie was constantly left to deal with her illness, exhaustion, and daughter on her own. Her breaking point was falling asleep while bathing her baby, leading Jee-Yun to briefly slip underwater. Thankfully, Maddie got her daughter to the hospital, where the baby was given a clean bill of health.
Unfortunately, that was too much for Maddie. Deciding she was no good for Jee-Yun, she leaves Chimney a tablet with a video stating the baby was not safe in her care and is better off without her.
Chimney finds out the upsetting news after finding his team with the baby and a note for him from Maddie. Maddie has taken off, leaving her boyfriend and their baby.
Is Jennifer Love Hewitt leaving 9-1-1?
After the discovery of Maddie taking off, fans grew concerned Hewitt would be leaving the hit show for good. Before the season began, showrunners teased possible mental health issues in Maddie. After viewers witnessed her being unable to cope with life anymore, fans grew worried. Fans hope this course of action was just a disappointing turn in Maddie’s life and not the beginning to her character’s end. When she quit her job as a 911 dispatcher, she admitted: “I feel like I’m losing my mind. I need help.”
From what we know, Hewitt has decided to take some time off the show. In late September, she posted on Instagram that she’d given birth to her third child.
Hewitt briefly discusses her character in an interview: “When you’ve experienced real trauma like she has, there are always new ways for that trauma to come up. For Maddie, the percentage of joy and happiness in her life is becoming much more than the darkness, so she’s headed in the right direction. But when you give someone a story like that, it’s hard to ever fully recover.”
We can only hope Hewitt’s time off from 9-1-1 does not her departure from the show.
