Call her Bond, Jane Bond. The internet wants to know who will play Bond in the next chapter of the long-running movie series. Daniel Craig is trading in his Walther PPK pistol for a magnifying glass as he moves to star in the Knives Out sequels for Amazon Prime. One former Bond actor said the next 007 could be a woman.

Former James Bond actor George Lazenby said a woman would make a fine Bond. And you don’t need to look outside of the series to find a good example. The Australian actor told TMZ that Dame Diana Rigg, who starred with him in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, was “everything a top spy could be — sexy, tough, sassy and able to look after herself. So, there’s no reason why you can’t have a special agent like that.”

Lazenby only played the iconic character in one film. He took over the role after Sean Connery vacated the role. But he lost the part when the Scottish actor decided to return for another round of shaken martinis.

It seems unlikely that a woman will slide into the bulletproof Astin Martin anytime soon, though. That’s because Bond producer Barbara Broccoli doesn’t like the idea of a gender-swapped Bond.

“(Bond) can be of any color, but he is male,” Broccoli told Variety. “I believe we should be creating new characters for women — strong female characters. I’m not particularly interested in taking a male character and having a woman play it. I think women are far more interesting than that.”

Daniel Craig backed up his boss recently.

“There should simply be better parts for women and actors of color,” Craig explained. “Why should a woman play James Bond when there should be a part just as good as James Bond, but for a woman?”

Who Will Be The Next James Bond?

No Time To Die hits theaters in the U.S. on Oct. 8 with Daniel Craig as the famous spy. After that, the next person who will play James Bond is unknown. Though, there are several people that producers are considering.

Most notably is Idris Elba, who fans have backed as the next Bond for years. Earlier this year, the Luther star said even his mom is holding out hope he’ll land the role.

“I know the rumors about Bond have always chased me,” Elba said, according to NME. “Listen, my poor mum is like ‘One day you’re going to get it!’ I was like ‘Mum, I’m good, I’ve got Luther!’ I’m definitely doing that.”

Though, there is no shortage of options. Tom Hardy, Richard Madden, and even former One Direction frontman Harry Styles are rumored to be in consideration for the role. But no definite answer has come from the 007 production offices.

Editor of the International Journal of James Bond Studies Dr. Ian Kinane said the job is most likely to go to someone who isn’t already incredibly famous.

He suggested Jamie Bell, who starred in several films including one that Broccoli produced, maybe a likely pick for the next Bond. He ruled out Henry Cavill, who producers screen-tested for the role before choosing Daniel Craig, because the Superman actor is too famous now.
