The world was shocked earlier today to hear of the passing of beloved actress and comedian, Betty White.

This heartbreaking news comes less than three-and-a-half weeks before what was to be the actress’s centennial birthday.

The news spread fast earlier today as friends, family, and fans alike mourned the loss of the treasured actress.

Now, People reports that White passed away peacefully in her sleep.

According to White’s agent, and close friend Jeff Witjas, White passed away while asleep “at her home early this morning.

The news came as a shock to many even as Betty White was approaching her one-hundredth birthday. The actress has long been known for her one-of-a-kind spunk and general zest for life.

“Even though Betty was about to be 100, I thought she would live forever,” Jeff Witjas says in a statement made earlier today.

“I will miss her terribly and so will the animal world that she loved so much,” Witjas continues of White.

“I don’t think Betty ever feared passing because she always wanted to be with her most beloved husband Allen Ludden,” he adds. “She believed she would be with him again.”

Betty White, You Will Certainly Be Missed

Betty White was eagerly preparing to celebrate her upcoming January 17 birthday; on which she was to turn one hundred years old.

Recently, the longtime actress and comedian spoke candidly about how she was feeling with the big milestone birthday right around the corner.

“I’m so lucky to be in such good health and feel so good at this age,” Betty White has said recently. “It’s amazing.”

We all loved Betty White for her good-natured humor and general plucky and upbeat demeanor. And, she has said recently, her upbeat nature and outgoing demeanor likely came from her being “born a cockeyed optimist.”

“I got it from my mom,” Betty White said recently.

“And that never changed,” the former Golden Girls star explained. “I always find the positive.”

It’s the positive energy that drew her fans to the veteran actress over the decades. She was the last remaining member of the Golden Girls cast as well as the cast of the Mary Tyler Moore Show.

When asked what her secret was to her long and celebrated life, the iconic actress told People that she tries “to avoid anything green.”

“I think it’s working,” the actress jokes.

After news of Betty White’s death broke, many stars took to social media to express their sadness over the loss. Among these tributes is one given to the actress’s memory from White’s The Proposal costar, Ryan Reynolds.

The two actors had developed a close – and hilarious – friendship over the years. And, from his touching tribute, it’s clear how much White meant to the Free Guy star.

“The world looks different now,” Ryan Reynolds writes after White’s passing.

“She was great at defying expectation,” the Red Notice star adds.

“She managed to grow very old and somehow, not old enough,” Reynolds continues. “We’ll miss you, Betty.”
