Many of television’s most popular crime dramas center around the partnerships between officers. These shows often center around highlighting bonds that are formed between officers while they work to solve some sensational crimes. However, the hit CBS police procedural Blue Bloods takes a different approach to this formula. The popular series has found its niche within the genre. The series did this by centering around one particular family of New York City officers, the Reagans.

Of course, while the Reagan family is centric to the series, Blue Bloods also features some core characters that are not members of the immediate family. Among these characters is Sergeant Anthony Renzulli who is portrayed by Nicholas Turturro. Turturro portrayed the charismatic sergeant in the popular series for six seasons from 2010 until 2016.

However, Turturro’s time on Blue Bloods ended abruptly after the premiere of the season six episode Cursed.

After the unexpected departure, Turturro didn’t provide any official reason as to why he decided to leave the series.

However, a look into the actor’s history on dramas such as Blue Bloods may provide a bit of an answer to this question. In the past, the long-time actor has been known to take breaks from roles in television dramas. It appears these breaks often came as Turturro went on to take on new roles in another series.

‘Blue Bloods’ Actor Finds Some New Roles Across His Career

For instance, when the Blue Bloods actor was playing detective James Martinez in the popular ABC police procedural NYPD Blue, he took a break from the role to portray Sammy “The Bull” Gravano a prolific mobster in the 1998 miniseries Witness to the Mob.

This could very well explain Turturro’s departure from Blue Bloods. During his 2010 to 2016 run on the CBS series, Nicholas Turturro remained active in a variety of other roles. According to the actor’s IMDB page, Turturro stars in the films Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2 and Zookeeper.

Turturro also made some appearances on the small screen during his time on Blue Bloods. In 2012 the actor guest-starred in season four episodes of the hit USA series White Collar. Then, in 2016, Turturro starred alongside his brother, John in an episode of the HBO limited series, The Night Of.

Turturro Helped Make Jamie The Officer He Is Today

Blue Bloods centers around the Reagan family, which is headed by Frank Reagan (Tom Selleck). The series follows the Reagans as they deal with a variety of police-related and legal-centered storylines.

In the series, Nicholas Turturro portrayed the training officer of the youngest Reagan son, Jamie (Will Estes).

Turturro’s Renzulli had a close relationship with the young Reagan. The Sergeant often moves between teasing the then-rookie NYPD officer and offering the officer sage advice.
