Jamie Reagan has a habit of being late to Reagan family dinner on Blue Bloods. It’s led to a petition on the part of Danny Reagan to start the meal without Jamie. But in the Season 8 finale, the Will Estes character had good reason for being late.
He had just gotten engaged to his partner, Eddie Janko. And he delivered the good news to his family by bringing her to dinner.
As Blue Bloods fans know, it’s nearly impossible to get an invite to Sunday dinner with the Reagans. Only two non-family members have ever made the grade, and even then, they were either former or current police partners. Who, as Jamie and Eddie have taught us, might as well be married couples anyway.
That said, the 22nd episode of Season 8 showed us one of those exceedingly rare guest entrances at the family dinner. Titled “My Aim is True,” the episode featured a dinner scene that began with Donnie Wahlberg’s Danny Reagan complaining about Jamie’s tardiness. Watch below.
When Jamie finally shows up, he asks Jack to set another place at the table, freezing the whole family in their tracks. He brings Eddie around the corner, and the Reagans are a mixture of delighted, surprised, and concerned.
“Officer Janko,” Tom Selleck’s Frank Reagan says formally. “Actually, just Eddie today, dad,” Jamie responds. And that’s when things really get juicy.
“Actually, not just Eddie today,” Janko clarifies. Jamie proceeds to give his family the big news, “Well, since this morning, the future Mrs. Jameson Reagan.”
The table explodes with relief, congratulations, and excited chatter. Well, most of it does. Frank Reagan takes some time with his emotions.
“Well, I’ll be damned,” he says finally, choking back a few tears. “Congratulations.”
Will Estes Was Afraid of Jamie’s ‘Blue Bloods’ Romance with Vanessa Ray’s Character at First
When two long-established characters who have had a “will-they-or-won’t-they” dynamic going on for years finally get together, it often spells disaster for their future on the show. Of course, there are notable exceptions. Look at Jim and Pam’s relationship on The Office.
But Jamie Reagan actor Will Estes’ mind didn’t go to the positive examples of TV romances when he first learned of his character’s marriage to Janko. He went straight to all of the instances he’d seen where settling down meant an end to compelling, central storylines.
“You know, one of my biggest fears, when I first heard about the characters… getting married, I was afraid of it. I was against it, you know? Because to me, it was kind of like, you know, Mulder and Scully from ‘X-Files.’ It’s like, once they’re together, what’s the story? You know, once that tension is gone… These characters had a huge affinity for each other and love and respect for each other. But I was worried about that story being over once they were married,” Estes told PopCulture in 2020.
