Despite his A-list status, ‘Blue Bloods’ star Tom Selleck knows how to keep his personal life away from the public eye. Married in 1987, Selleck kept his lips sealed about the wedding with his wife Jillie Mack for over a month.

A Slow Romance

Tom Selleck first met his now-wife, Mack, in 1984 when attending the musical “Cats” in London. Selleck spotted the actress among her costars while backstage visiting his friend Brian Blessed who also starred in the production.  However, Selleck was not the one to make a move. The long-time actor shared in an interview with AARP that it took him time to build up courage, and before he could ask Jillie Mack out, she did the hard part for him. After visiting Cats several times, Selleck finally called up Mack on a theater phone just before a performance. “She had to go on. I was hemming and hawing, and she finally asked, ‘Do you want to meet for a cocktail?’” Selleck shares.

To add to the magic, Mack had no idea who Tom Selleck was, or what kind of star power he held as an on-screen actor. Jillie Mack admits, “My television had been stolen three months before. I’d never heard of him.”

Tom Selleck’s Big Day

When the pair married in Lake Tahoe in 1987, they opted to hold the wedding in a discrete chapel for privacy. Not even the minister knew the true identity of the couple until just minutes before the ceremony. Thanks to Bob Selleck, Tom’s brother and real estate executive, the pair was able to prevent their wedding arrangements from being leaked to the press. Bob Selleck opted to making wedding arrangements for the couple using alias names, “Tom Jenkins” and “Suzie Mark”.

The couple also chose to have their wedding photographed using a Polaroid camera in an additional effort to keep the event private from the press. On his decision to choose privacy, Selleck shares his distaste for an event where he was surrounded by hysterical fans nearly trampling him, and how the event’s organizer seemed pleased with the terrifying commotion. “He was just delighted. He had created an event. Afterward, I called my agent and said, ‘I don’t know whether I can do this unless I find a way to do it on my terms,” Selleck says. After seeing the way some people in Hollywood were willing to exploit the actor and his safety to garner attention and fame, its no wonder the couple prioritized their privacy so heavily surrounding their union.  “We wanted some dignity…. People who seek out fame? I don’t get them,”  Selleck says.

Cats Out of the Bag

Just under a month following the wedding news of the Hollywood couple’s union broke via ‘The Nevada Appeal’. Once the news was shared on terms other than the couple’s own, Selleck made the most of the situation. The actor reached out to press to share details of the day and to share his own story. Amongst the details shared is the wedding itself only costing a modest $75, and the beautiful simplicity of the day.

Tom Selleck and his wife Jillie Mack now reside in a ranch outside of Hollywood, where the couple moved just after the birth of their daughter Hannah.  27 years later, that ranch continues to be home base for the Selleck family.
