Blue Bloods is in its 12 seasons on CBS, which is an impressive feat for any series. And Jamie Reagan’s Will Estes believes the secret to the show’s longevity lies in its uniqueness and Tom Selleck’s smiling face.
The Emmy-nominated crime drama Blue Bloods follows the Reagan family, who all have careers in New York City law enforcement. The series, which debuted in 2010, stars major Hollywood actors such as Tom Selleck, Donnie Wahlberg, and Bridget Moynahan. And after 11 years on the small screen, it’s still as popular as ever.
Will Estes, who plays Jamie Reagan, has been with the series since the debut episode in 2010. Today, he sat down with Looper to talk about working on such a successful drama. And he shared some insight into the show’s longevity.
Will Estes Believes That ‘Blue Bloods’ is Unlike Any Other Procedural
According to Will Estes, the secret to Blue Blood’s success is “slightly intangible” because a lot of shows have been canceled in the past with no rhyme or reason. In fact, some of his favorite series didn’t “go very long.” So it takes a certain amount of “luck” and “kismet’ for a show to be picked up year after year. And being a procedural drama doesn’t exactly help because primetime slots are saturated with crime dramas.
But while Blue Bloods is considered a procedural drama, Estes doesn’t believe that it’s an accurate classification.
“I think that what sets us apart from other procedurals is that we’re not really a procedural,” he shared with Looper.
Blue Bloods is more about the Reagan family than the criminals they chase. Each episode showcases the strong bond between the family members. And the plot follows their criminal justice lifestyle. So the show has a bit of uniqueness that sets it apart from other procedurals.
“We definitely have a lot of procedural elements,” he admitted. “But I think we’re a character-driven drama. Our show is more so about how these characters’ lives affect their work and how their work affects their personal lives and their inter-familial relationships and friendships. So, it kind of lives and breathes in that space as a drama, and that’s part of its longevity.”
But of course, there is a lot that goes into creating a hit drama. And Blue Bloods wouldn’t be successful without the cast and crew. Also, fans love seeing Tom Selleck’s face each week.
“Tom Selleck as the consummate leader and commissioner and patriarch of the family [helps too],” Will Estes added. “I think people want to see Tom, and then we are rounded out by a great cast and great writers and a great crew too.”
