‘Blue Bloods’: Steve Schirripa’s First Reaction to Role of Anthony

by Joe Rutland

Steve Schirripa was a household name before joining Blue Bloods, but joining in the role of Anthony Abetemarco upped the ante.

Schirripa, who played in The Sopranos before joining the CBS police drama, talks about his character in a 2016 interview with Talk Nerdy With Us.

“Well, I think he’s a very smart guy,” he said. “I think Anthony is a little unorthodox and I don’t think he cares so much about how he looks; he kind of beats to his own drum.

“He’s very loyal and I think that he’s very good at what he does,” Schirripa said. “He’s a very good investigator. And certainly, working with Erin Reagan (Bridget Moynahan), who is the DA and is very smart and comes from a strong family, Anthony comes from a different place.

“He comes from a very blue-collar family,” the Blue Bloods star said. “He comes from Brooklyn. They get the job done together but they have two different points of view.”

Schirripa joined the CBS drama in 2015 and it looks like he’ll be hanging around to help Erin out as an investigator.

‘Blue Bloods’ Star Talks About How He Prepares For ‘Sopranos’ Themed Podcast

Now you would think that Schirripa, a veteran actor who has done interviews with media people, could understand the need of preparing for them.

In his case, though, it’s a podcast.

Schirripa played Bobby Bacala in the HBO series The Sopranos. These days, he and his Sopranos co-star Michael Imperioli, host the podcast Talking Sopranos. It looks back at old episodes and both actors discuss what’s happening.

He talked about the podcast and his preparation during a 2020 interview with GQ.

The Blue Bloods actor said he never listened to a moment of a podcast.

“I tried to listen to a very popular one and I couldn’t last 60 seconds,” he said. “Nothing against them, it’s just.”

He said that he’s impatient about podcasts, plus he didn’t want to copy other people.

Schirripa said he’s “just doing my own thing. I’m not a podcast. I have a flip phone for Chrissake.”

Schirripa Said He Was Surprised To Finally Get Role Of A Good Guy

Playing Bobby Bacala is not going to be seen as a good guy character because, well, it’s The Sopranos.

So forgive him if, in a 2016 interview with Fox News, Schirripa suggested he never would play a good guy.

“I play a D.A. investigator,” Schirripa told Fox. “Finally, I play a good guy!”

He entered the Blue Bloods world in Season 6. But he’s having a great time playing Anthony Abetemarco as well as interacting with the show’s cast.

Schirripa said he felt honored. “It’s a well-written show, and they wrote me a great role,” he said.
