‘Bull’: How Michael Weatherly Came Up With His Character’s Signature Look

by Jacklyn Krol

Did you know that Michael Weatherly came up with Bull‘s signature look.

In an interview with HeyUGuys, the NCIS alum revealed how he created the character. Part of Dr. Bull’s signature look is his black glasses. Those were all part of the plan.

“The glasses were inspired by Marcello Mastroianni and Michael Caine in the Harry Palmer films, The Ipcress File and Funeral in Berlin, as well as Colin Firth in A Single Man. There was something sort of elegant and distanced about them, and a barrier,” he explained.

But it isn’t just the glasses that make Jason into an actual character. Weatherly wanted him to be wise and somewhat of a predator. Especially since in the courtroom he is a fierce fighter who doesn’t always play by the rules. When he sets out on a mission, he accomplishes it.

“But I also loved Gary Oldman in Tinker Tailor Soldier Spyand Alec Guinness. That George Smiley character is watchful and he’s a predator, you know. It’s owl-like and you think owls are these wise birds who just sit up on a branch,” he continued. “They are looking to kill something on the ground! That to me was the starting point with Bull, that he’s a predator and he’s alone like an owl on a branch sitting in his little courtroom and he has that physicality.”

‘Bull’: Why Did Benny Leave the Michael Weatherly-Led Series?

Freddy Rodriguez and his Benny Colón’s departure during the sixth season came as such a shock to fans. So what happened between seasons 5 and 6?

During the Season 6 premiere, the Trial Analysis Corporation team discussed what had happened to Benny. It flashed to the entire TAC team doing karaoke before revealing what happened to their beloved Benny.

“Benny is blissfully happy in Rome, singing ‘Mi Amore’ to his Italian bride,” Marissa Morgan (Geneva Carr) said in the episode.“True love won’t be denied,” Bull added.

Fans will recall that Benny returned to Bull and TAC after almost running for the District Attorney. Making his exit all that more of a surprise since we were left with the entire team back together.

TV Line reported that CBS conducted an investigation into the show after numerous writers exited the show. This also included showrunner Glenn Gordon Caron who was actually terminated by the studio.

What makes things even more suspicious is the fact that just a week before announcing Rodriguez’s own departure he shared an exciting Instagram post. “Thrilled to announce that we will be returning for a Season 6.”

CBS has not released a statement or official reason for Benny nor the staff’s departures. However, back in May, a producer who worked with Caron addressed his work in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

“It was a toxic environment while I was there. And now that I have much more experience and I have been a showrunner myself, I can tell you, there are a lot of different ways to tell a writer that what they’re submitting didn’t work for you without attacking them in a cruel way,” producer Melinda Hsu Taylor said.
