Eleven years after NBC shocked fans by pulling the plugs on its massively successful Law & Order flagship series, the network has announced a revival. Promising fans a twenty-first season of the popular original series.
So far, little is known about the upcoming series. But, notes early reports from the Law & Order showrunners, fans can expect the return of some of our favorite key players when the series returns in 2022.
So, what does this mean, overall? Can fans expect a full lineup of returning Law & Order favorites? Could we see the return of some of the series’s most iconic characters such as Lieutenant Anita Van Buren (S. Epatha Merkerson) as plans move forward?
And, if so, what would this mean for Merkerson’s current role on NBC’s hit Chicago One series Chicago Med?
Will S. Epetha Merkerson Be Headed Back to Her Old Spot on ‘Law & Order’?
Since 2015, S. Epatha Merkerson has portrayed Chicago Med’s Sharon Goodwin the head of Patient and Medical Services at Chicago Med’s Gaffney Chicago Medical Center.
Reports from NBC’s Chicago Med producers note that S. Epatha Merkerson has no plans to leave the hit medical drama series in the near future.
Reports note that the former Law & Order actress has extended her contract with Chicago Med. However, the extent to which she plans to stay is still unknown. And it is uncertain whether or not the actress’s recent contract is one that extends over multiple years and seasons or one that simply extends it into the near future.
While, at this point, any ideas along these lines when it comes to casting are simply speculation.
Could the Actress End Up Pulling Double Duty?
The Law & Order producers have not yet made any announcements regarding the casting of the upcoming series revival.
However, it would make sense that Merkerson would be one of the characters most likely to return next year, as the show begins its twenty-first season.
First, S. Epetha Merkerson’s character has long been a favorite in the series. The tough-talking lieutenant was a fixture in the New York City police department, and Law & Order fans were used to seeing her on the series.
Of course, there’s always the possibility that the actress could find herself with dual opportunities. Roles on both Chicago Med and the Law & Order revival as the show returns to the airwaves.
Both shows are produced by primetime producer Dick Wolf, and both will be airing on NBC.
This leaves open the possibility the S. Epetha Merkerson may continue on Chicago Med while bringing back her Law & Order character in a limited capacity.
The original Law & Order series premiered twenty-one years ago in 1990, and it was the show that started it all.
From this wildly popular procedural drama emerged a number of spin-offs including the enormously successful Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.
In addition to launching numerous franchise branch-offs, the original Law & Order series also launched numerous television careers for its stars along the way.
