‘Chicago PD’: LaRoyce Hawkins Speaks on How Atwater Is Choosing ‘Safety Over the Secret’

by Jacklyn Krol

Chicago PD star LaRoyce Hawkins spoke about Atwater’s big secret.

Officer Kevin Atwater has been a staple in the cast from the start of the series. In Season 9, Episode 5, “Burnside,” he meets and has a one-night stand with Celeste, played by Amanda Payton. When asked what his job is, he lies and doesn’t say that he is a police officer as she has an issue with cops.

Later on, we discover that two of Celeste’s art students are killed. Chicago PD is, of course, working the case, including Atwater. He manages to keep his job a secret and keep away from Celeste during the investigation. When he was about to confess his secret to her, she stops him. How long can he keep the ruse going?

In a new interview with TV Insider, Hawkins spoke about his character’s troubles.

“He went in thinking, ‘I gotta let her know,’ and it becomes easier not to,” he explained. “For both of them, it becomes easier for them to just find the safest space they can with each other because the main thing that I know we’re all as a cast and crew working towards for this season is home. What does home mean? What does home feel like for every character? Home is different. Home isn’t just where the heart is, but where you feel the safest, and in that moment, Atwater decides to choose safety over the secret. They do their best with it from there.”

Although Atwater just met Celeste and it was originally a hookup after a night out at the bar, this isn’t the last we’ve seen of Celeste. Hawkins confirmed that Payton will reprise her role, it is unclear how big her role will actually be or how often fans will see her.

“I hope that we notice a difference in Atwater’s energy,” he added. “A light or peace that he has that he may have struggled with historically because he didn’t really have a safe space or someone to share his life with … We’ll see how long Atwater can hold this secret.”

What ‘Chicago PD’ Creators Had to Say About His Love Interest

Chicago PD showrunner Rich Eid confirmed to TVLine that Atwater would have a girlfriend this season. Does this mean that Celeste and Atwater’s relationship will become official? Is it another woman?

“He meets a dynamic young woman, and their bond is fun and really unique. For Atwater, it’s a welcome, needed respite,” Eid revealed. “It also becomes this safe space for the pair to be their true selves. But of course, things will be complicated, as any relationship on this show tends to be. It’ll be a great ride for his character.”
