The popular NBC police procedural drama, Chicago PD is set to return early in 2022. It may seem like a long time until we can watch the rest of the hit show’s ninth season. However, Chicago PD showrunners are starting to share some information about what we can expect from the second half of PD’s fall season as we wait.

According to Chicago PD’s producers, the mid-season premiere is bringing with it some big storylines for some of our favorite PD officers. Among these exciting storylines is a shift that will take place in Kevin Atwater’s already shaky relationship with Celeste.

In Chicago PD’s ninth season, fans were introduced to a new love interest in Kevin Atwater’s (Laroyce Hawkins) life.

The chemistry between Hawkins’s Atwater and Amanda Payton’s Celeste is incredible. The two connect immediately and develop a fairly deep bond in a short amount of time. However, there is one big secret that Atwater is keeping from Celeste…the fact that he is a cop.

Fans of the series know that Atwater needs to come clean to his new love interest. But, it will certainly not be an easy thing to do.

“Atwater’s lies put him in a tricky position — both morally and on the job,” Chicago PD showrunner Gwen Sigan once said in an interview with TVLine.

“It’s quite a dilemma for him and also explores some deep territory Atwater’s been dealing with this season,” the executive producer adds. “The reasons he felt compelled to lie to Celeste, his relationship to being police, and his identity at large.”

When Atwater and Celeste first meet, their conversation doesn’t move naturally to what each of them does for a living.

One ‘Chicago PD’ Officer Will Likely Come Clean In Upcoming Episode

The Chicago PD officer learns that Celeste is not only a teacher by an activist for her students. However, she also has profound distrust in police officers, especially after one of her students dies in police custody. A case in which Atwater is involved.

Even then, though, Atwater didn’t work up the nerve to come clean to Celeste.

This is why we are excited to learn that Chicago PD will explore how Atwater’s lie will affect his relationship with Celeste when the series returns next year.

Clearly, the two have a strong connection, and Atwater must give Celeste the chance to get to know who he really is.

According to Sigan, Atwater is “falling for this girl, yet she doesn’t know the real him.”

“It’s an interesting look at Atwater’s identity and how he defines himself,” the executive producer adds.
