With the new series Dexter: New Blood set to premiere this evening (November 7th), the star of the highly anticipated show, Michael C. Hall, is now opening up about bringing back his serial killer character, Dexter Morgan.
While chatting with TVLine earlier this week, the Dexter: New Blood star opened up about bringing his character back after eight years. “Just as audiences were unsatisfied, I think it was far from supremely satisfying for us. And a big part of our motivation to put a better taste in people’s mouths.”
Michael C. Hall then discussed Dexter being reunited with his son, Harrison, during Dexter: New Blood. “The richness of that relationship and the exploration is a big part of what we’re up to,” Hall explained. “And a big part of why this felt like a story worth telling. [It] felt like the right time.”
In regards to who will be Dexter’s “dark passenger” in Dexter: New Blood, it looks as though the passenger has taken the form of Dexter’s sister, Debra Morgan, who died in the previous series. Hall stated that the idea of including Deb immediately felt essential to the new series.
“Dexter’s relationship with his sister was the fundamental relationship throughout the series proper,” Hall explained. It always felt difficult to not have that be a component. It felt necessary that it wouldn’t be given that she’s dead. But this is Dexter. We have certain liberties.”
‘Dexter: New Blood’ Star Michael C. Hall Reflects on the ‘Dissatisfaction’ of the Original Series’ Finale
During a recent interview with GQ, Dexter: New Blood star Michael C. Hall admitted there were struggles with the Dexter fandom after the original series’ “dissatisfying” finale. “I mean, a part of both the hesitation and the appetite surrounding going back with orbiting the fact that audiences love the show. But [they] were very dissatisfied with the end it ended.”
Hall also stated that he didn’t want to return with Dexter: New Blood just because he and the Dexter crew could. He wanted to return because they discovered a story that felt like it was worth telling. “Something like this that is dependent on so many moving parts. You never know exactly how it’s all going to go.”
The Dexter: New Blood star further explained that ultimately he had enough faith to take the leap with the new series. “And that had to do with the scripts that were all written. The story we decided to tell. This new context we found for the show.”
Hall does go on to admit that he didn’t for sure that returning to the Dexter universe was something that he would do. But it was always something in the back of his mind. “Like, ‘Man, I sure do hope that something emerges.’ I wanted to give the fans, myself, and the character a more satisfying and definitive visit.”
