Following the heated moment between Will Smith and Chris Rock at the 94th annual Oscars over the weekend, the Independence Day star’s mom, Carolyn Smith, is speaking out about her son slapping the comedian.

According to Variety, Will Smith lashed out at Chris Rock after the comedian made a job about Smith’s wife, Jada Pinkett Smith’s bald head. Pinkett Smith notably has the autoimmune skin disease alopecia, which causes hair loss. She has been very open about the illness and decided to shave her head last year.

After Rock made the joke, Will Smith walked onto the Oscar stage and slapped the comedian. After returning to his seat, Smith yelled at Rock, “Keep my wife’s name out of your f—ing mouth” twice.

While speaking to Philadelphia’s ABC 6 Action News, Will Smith’s mom shared her thoughts on the situation. “He is a very even, people person. That’s the first time I’ve ever seen him go off. First time in his lifetime…I’ve never seen him do that.”

Will Smith’s younger sister, Ellen Smith, also told the media outlet that she has been watching her brother constantly excel while being under press and under the Hollywood spotlight. “I’ve had conversations with him. And it like really kind of broke my heart listening to the things he’s said he had to go through to get where he is.”

Despite what happened on the Oscar stage, Will Smith’s mom continues to remain supportive of him and his acting career. “I am proud of him being him.”

After his on-stage encounter with Chris Rock, Will Smith won Best Actor for his role in King Richard, which was about the father of tennis professionals Serena and Venus Williams.

Will Smith Apologizes to Chris Rock For Slapping Him During the Oscars

Less than 24 hours after slapping Chris Rock at the Oscars, Will Smith issued a statement on his Instagram page apologizing to the comedian for his actions.

“Violence in all of its forms is poisonous and destructive,” Will Smith declared. “My behavior at last night’s Academy Awards was unacceptable and inexcusable. Jokes at my expense are a part of the job. But a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear and I reacted emotionally.”

Will Smith goes on to publicly apologize to Chris Rock. “I was out of line and I was wrong. I am embarrassed and my actions were not indicative of the man I want to be. There is no place for violence in a world of love and kindness.”

The now Oscar-winning actor then apologized to the Academy, the award show’s producers, the attendees, and viewers for his actions. “I would like to apologize to the Williams Family and my King Richard Family. I deeply regret that my behavior has stained what has been an otherwise gorgeous journey for all of us.”
