‘Expendables’ Star Dolph Lundgren Explains Why He Decided to Join the Franchise

by Madison Miller

Sylvester Stallone’s baby is “The Expendables” franchise. He wrote the action-thriller franchise, which started in 2010 with an all-star ensemble cast.

There has been a whole slew of amazing actors that stopped by for roles in the franchise. That includes Jason Statham, Terry Crews, Randy Couture, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Chuck Norris, Harrison Ford, Antonio Banderas, Kellan Lutz, Mel Gibson, and that is just a brief outline of the characters that have had roles in the franchise.

Dolph Lundgren’s Love for ‘The Expendables’

One of the most popular actors in the franchise is Dolph Lundgren, who played Gunner Jensen. He was in the very first movie and is slated to also appear in “The Expendables 4,” which comes out in 2022.

He’s one of the few that has appeared in each of the movies in the franchise. So, what is it that has made him so attracted to the franchise, to begin with? The movies have made a total of $800 million at the worldwide box office, which is enough reason.

“You know, it was being directed by Sly and he’s a very, very smart man. He created ‘Rocky,’ and ‘The Expendables,’ and I think the timing was good because he had old-school fights, shootouts, and more of our visual effects. Kind of older guys who’re washed up, that nobody wants, and they do these missions for the government, and if they get killed, nobody cares. I thought it was a good idea,” Dolph Lundgren told Looper.

It’s no wonder that many of the actors signing onto the franchise would want to work with Sylvester Stallone. He’s a Hollywood A-lister that will forever be remembered for his iconic role in the “Rocky” franchise.

In addition to getting to work with Stallone, Lundgren also just liked the overall concept of the movie. He liked that the movie was unique in that it focuses on washed-up soldiers and agents all working together. He seems content sticking around too. “It’s the opportunity to go back and reprise [my] character, and have a little fun in the dramatic space for a little while,” Lundgren also said.

Looking at ‘The Expendables 4’

“The Expendables 4” will come out sometime in 2022 and, despite being the fourth movie in the franchise, is still finding ways to stay fresh and relevant.

A lot of this has to do with adding in brand-new characters. Some actors that signed onto the new movie include Megan Fox, 50 Cent, Tony Jaa, Eddie Hall, and Iko Uwais. “The Raid” star Uwais is actually going to be playing the villain in the upcoming installment.

According to Deadline, the movie is now in post-production, however, while it was filming an incident occurred on the set. Two crew members were injured while filming in Greece. One person was a painter that was injured after falling from high up. The individual required hospital treatment but has since recovered.

Another person had their foot run over by a stuntman slowing backing up a vehicle. This individual has since recovered as well.

Sadly, “The Expendables” is no stranger to gruesome injuries. In 2011, one of the stuntmen working died and another was seriously injured while filming in Bulgaria. Even some of the stars of the movie have reported some minor injuries along the way.
