‘General Hospital’: Major Character Killed Off in Shocking Twist

by Anna Dunn

A General Hospital character was just killed off in a shocking twist. The hit soap laid to rest one of its most well-known characters in the entire series, Luke Spenser. Anthony Geary, who played the character, left the show in 2015. But it was revealed in last night’s episode that Spenser actually died off-screen.

Tracy Quartermaine, Luke’s bride, revealed to his soul mate, Laura, that Spenser died in a cable car accident in Australia. But that’s not all. At the end of the episode, it’s hinted that Victor Cassadine engineered the entire accident, causing Spenser’s death.

Anthony Geary Was Honest About Why He Left ‘General Hospital’

Anthony Geary left the show six years ago, only briefly returning in 2017 as a way to help another actor depart from the show. Geary left the show with quite the stark remarks. The actor, who had been on the show for a long time, was wary of continuing.

“I’m just weary of the grind and have been for 20 years. I really don’t want to die, collapsing in a heap, on that GH set one day. That wouldn’t be too poetic,” he said in his retirement announcement. He’s won eight Emmys for his work on the soap.

He also noted months after his retirement statement that maybe, there was more work to do as Luke Spenser after all.

“If the story is interesting to me and it works out, I may come back to the show for six weeks or so. I really don’t think we have exhausted what [Luke] can do. It depends on the writers and how far they want to look,” he said.

It looks like the writers later had… quite different plans. Anthony Geary had played Luke Spenser since 1978. He now lives in The Netherlands.

The Show Has Seen a Lot of Actors Come and Go

While some characters are getting written off for good, other actors continue to join the series. The Nanny and Days of Our Lives actor Charles Shaughnessy has joined the show. And there are plenty of guest stars coming and going.

Some actors leave the show for the same reasons Geary did: just to have some time to themselves and do something new.

Sadly, there have also been some actors on the show who have since passed away as well. With so many people joining the show over the years, there have also been plenty of goodbyes. Recently, Bergen Williams who played Big Alice died at 62.  Jay Pickett, who played David Harper on the series in the 2000s, also recently passed away.

With episodes airing since 1963, General hospital has seen plenty of character send-offs. But no death has been quite as shocking as this one considering the actor has been gone for years. And considering it’s a soap, there’s no telling what’ll happen next.
