Sometimes our favorite thing to do is to settle in and find a good film to watch on Netflix. Of course, the popular streaming service offers all types of options along these lines. Ultimately providing plenty of films for movie lovers in pretty much any genre available. So, it’s no surprise that one of the most popular movie genres on Netflix to watch is one that has been a major player in film for many years: the beloved western.

Here Are Some Of Our Favorite Westerns To Watch On Netflix

From some of our classic favorites such as the Kevin Costner-led Dances With Wolves; to more recent western films such as The Harder They Fall or Concrete Cowboy, Netflix has a western for every fan of this long-adored movie genre to watch. Here are some of our favorites:

The Harder They Fall (2021)

This Idris Elba film features the story of an all-black outlaw gang set out for revenge. The film features an awarding-winning cast including Elba, Regina King, and Jonathan Majors.

The Ballad of Buster Scruggs (2018)

This film is written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen. The Ballad of Buster Scruggs is an anthology following six short western films. From comedic moments to unexpected tragedy, this anthology installment touches on pretty much every element we love about classic western films.

Dances With Wolves (1990)

Certainly, no list of the best westerns to catch on Netflix can be complete without an appearance of the Kevin Costner classic, Dances With Wolves. This award-winning film is written and directed by the Yellowstone star. The film follows Costner as he portrays a Civil War lieutenant. Costner’s character connects with a Sioux tribe while serving at a post deep within the western frontier. This movie earned multiple awards including the Academy Award for Best Picture.

The Power of the Dog (2021)

This award-winning film has received a ton of accolades and even some scrutiny recently. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as a ruthless rancher determined to maintain the “tough guy” cowboy traditions alive in Montana during the 1920s. However, things get tense when the rancher’s brother marries a woman with a sensitive teen son. Consequently, this hit film is full of unexpected twists and turns, the film has fast become a modern western favorite.

Wind River (2017)

This is a western film with a chilling murder mystery mixed in. Wind River follows wildlife tracker and cowboy Cory Lambert (Jeremy Renner) who stumbles upon the body of a local teenager. Elizabeth Olsen’s character, an FBI agent, responds to the calls asking for Lambert’s help in the investigation. Eventually, the evidence leads to a haunting discovery. Additionally, there’s a back story to the creation of this movie. Yellowstone’s Taylor Sheridan was inspired to create this film after learning about real-life cases similar to those depicted in Wind River.

Django Unchained (2012)

This Quentin Tarantino hit western film became a cult favorite almost from the jump. With an all-star cast including the film’s star,Jamie Foxx; as well as screen icons Leonardo DiCaprio, Kerry Washington, and many more, Django Unchained continues to see massive success. The film follows Foxx as the title character who teams up with a bounty hunter to free his wife from a diabolical plantation owner.
