Il Divo singer Carlos Marin has passed away at the age of 53.

Marin was the Spanish baritone in the group and died of an undisclosed illness on Sunday, December 19.

Marin was first admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at the Manchester Royal Medical Center in Manchester, England on Dec. 8. The group was on tour in the UK, the Spanish outlet El Español reported. He was reportedly placed in a medically induced coma. His life support was allegedly turned off.

According to Yahoo, he passed away from COVID-19 complications but this has not been confirmed by the band.

The four-piece group has postponed its UK Christmas tour until December 2022. But this occurred prior to his passing. The band announced his death via Twitter on Monday, December 20.

“It is with heavy hearts that we are letting you know that our friend and partner, Carlos Marin, has passed away,” they wrote. “He will be missed by his friends, family and fans. There wiIl never be another voice or spirit like Carlos.”

They added, however, “For 17 years the four of us have been on this incredible journey of Il Divo together, and we will miss our dear friend. We hope and pray that his beautiful soul will rest in peace. With Love — David, Sebastien and Urs.”

Il Divo Statements

Il Divo invited all of their fans to celebrate his life. They requested that they share their favorite memories of Carlos Marin on social media using the hashtag #CarlosMarinForever. Fans flooded the hashtag and it even began trending in several countries on Twitter.

Overall, Il Divo has sold over 28 million records since its inception. Simon Cowell formed the group back in 2003 after being inspired by Andrea Bocelli singing ‘Con te partirò’ (Time to Say Goodbye). They signed to his Sony imprint record label Syco. The quartet was described as a mixture between pop and opera. They have performed in English, Spanish, Japanese, Italian, and French.

Cowell tweeted about his death, however, attempting to find the words.

“I am finding this so difficult to put into words how I feel right now,” he wrote. “I am devastated Carlos Marin has passed away. He loved life. He loved performing and always had so much appreciation towards the fans who supported the group from day 1. Rest in peace Carlos. I will miss you.”

Bruno Tonioli tweeted, “Devastated @ildivoofficial @carlosmarin_ passed away We had the best time putting together the first @ildivoofficial performance 17 yeas ago great voice great man a true passionate Spirit with wicked sense of humor we will miss you so sad.”

Finally, Il Divo released their most recent album this past July with For Once in My Life: A Celebration of Motown.
