Current “Jeopardy!” champ Matt Amodio faced some fierce competition in last night’s game, enough that he almost lost his first match when it came down to the “Final Jeopardy!” question.

Amodio now holds the record for the third-highest consecutive wins on the show, totaling 24 after last night’s close performance. His strategy of betting big and grabbing Daily Doubles has worked pretty well for him so far, but it does come with its risks. And now, Amodio’s competitors are taking note and using similar strategies.

Going into the “Final Jeopardy!” round last night, Amodio led the game with $33,200. But competitor Tracy Pitzel followed not too far behind him with $17,000. With the right wager, she could’ve easily caught up to the current champion.

And Pitzel made that wager. Her $16,600 bet would’ve put her $400 ahead of Amodio if she’d gotten the question right. Unfortunately for her, she didn’t answer the “Final Jeopardy!” question correctly.

Which was a lucky break for Amodio. He answered incorrectly as well, dropping him to $31,200. If his competitor had gotten the right answer, she would’ve easily overtaken him and won the match.

“Jeopardy!” teased Amodio about his lucky break on Twitter last night. The game show referenced the final answer, “What is ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'”, calling out a moment when Amodio said behind-the-scenes that the main thing he remembered about the movie was Jessica Rabbit.

“If the final clue had been about Jessica Rabbit, maybe @amodiomatt wouldn’t have missed it,” the game show tweeted with a winky face.

Amodio quickly fired back with a quippy comment. “I’m not bad at 80s movies, I’m just drawn that way.”

But he also admitted that the game got a little too close for comfort, especially after the “Final Jeopardy!” question.

“This was a great game against two smart people… *phew* that was close,” Amodio replied to their Tweet.

Current ‘Jeopardy!’ Chamo Matt Amodio Continues the Roast Fest Between Him and Legend James Holzhauer

At this point, only two “Jeopardy!” legends stand in between Matt Amodio and ultimate trivia show success. James Holzhauer holds the record right above Amodo with 32 consecutive wins, while all-time champ Ken Jennings holds first place with 74 wins. Those two also won the most amount of money during their games.

As Amodio creeps closer to Holzhauer’s record, the legend’s started taking notice. He ribbed the current champion on Twitter earlier this week to effectively put him in his place.

In the tweet below, we see Holzhauer showing off his superior winnings compared to Amodio’s after they both won 23 consecutive games. Ouch.

But Amodio doesn’t take it lying down. He quickly claps back and replies to Holzhauer’s tweet, “I thought these memes were supposed to have the more attractive person on the left.”

Let the feuding and shots-firing begin!

To add even more fuel to the flame, Amodio also quote tweeted the message and said, “Must be nice having time to throw shade on Twitter. Us #Jeopardy champions with 0 career losses have actual work to do.”

Oof, Holzhauer’s gonna be looking to get Amodio back after that one.
