‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Matt Amodio Reveals What He Really Thinks of Ken Jennings and James Holzhauer

by Chris Haney

Even though Jeopardy! champion Matt Amodio’s historic win streak came to an end last month, he’s been making the rounds to talk about his epic run on the game show. During a recent interview, Amodio opened up about his Jeopardy! experience and shared his admiration for the game show’s legendary competitors James Holzhauer and Ken Jennings.

Matt Amodio went on a win streak for the ages in recent months. He officially earned second place for consecutive wins behind his 38 victories in a row. He surpassed previous second-place finisher James Holzhauer. But he didn’t come close to Jennings’ epic 74-game win streak from 2004.

The Yale Ph.D. student is thrilled to be part of Jeopardy!‘s history, and Amodio’s especially ecstatic to be in the company of Jennings and Holzhauer. In fact, he thought he may even get to meet Jennings if his win streak continued. The Jeopardy! consultant turned part-time host of the show is scheduled to take over hosting duties from Mayim Bialik on Nov. 8. But Amodio would’ve had to keep his win streak alive to stay on the show to meet him.

Unfortunately, Amodio’s win streak ended on his 39th episode, but he may yet get to meet his fellow Jeopardy! champions. He’ll be taking part in the “Tournament of Champions” later this season. Plus fans are calling for a new champions competition that would place Amodio, Jennings, and Holzhauer against each other.

While speaking about his fellow champions with Cleveland 19 News, Amodio revealed how he truly felt about Jennings and Holzhauer. He couldn’t help but praise each of the former Jeopardy! contestants.

“I treasure Ken. He is the greatest of all time,” Amodio told Cleveland 19 News. “I know myself pretty well and I know I’m no James Holzhauer. So to see me above him on the record book it just doesn’t make sense. This is better than I had optimistically dreamed of.”

‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Says He Would Love the Opportunity to Face Off Against Jennings and Holzhauer

The 30-year-old champion also joined The Dan Patrick Show this week to talk about his historic win streak. Host Dan Patrick and Matt Amodio discussed his experience on the popular game show at length. He too asked about Jennings and Holzhauer, and wanted to know Amodio’s thoughts on facing them in a round of Jeopardy!. But he first asked Amodio to describe himself in comparison to the other two champions.

“Holzhauer is cocky, Jennings is a know-it-all, what is Matt Amodio?” Patrick asked him on the radio show.

“I tried to have a more laid-back persona than that,” Amodio answered. “They’re really intimidating, and they create a barrier between the average person and them. And I think I’m a lot more like the average person. And so, I’m trying to convey that.”

“But don’t you want a piece of those guys?” Patrick responded.

“I would love to have the opportunity. I’m sure they would wipe the floor with me, but it would be fun,” Amodio said. “It would be fun to see what they would be like in person. You have to have a persona on camera, and I don’t know if that’s actually what they are.”
