‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Matt Amodio Reveals What Is Helping Him to Keep Hot Streak Alive

by Anna Dunn

Jeopardy! champ Matt Amodio is taking fans by storm with his thrilling 33 game winning streak. In a recent interview with Good Morning America, Amodio talked about strategy and what’s allowed him to keep his streak alive. The champ is coming close to breaking some major records, coming for Ken Jennings’ longest winning streak title. Fans are waiting with bated breath to see if he can pull it off.

Ironically, Good Morning America host Robin Roberts pointed out that Amodio’s winning streak began when she was guest hosting the show. Now, she’s interviewing him about his impressive, record-breaking gameplay.

“Matt. I would love to say I knew, but I had no idea,” she admitted.

“My first game was the Wednesday game with you,” he told Robin. “And I thought there was no chance I’d be on there longer than you would.”

When Roberts asked him about what has kept him going this long, Amodio answered honestly.

“A lot of luck. I feel like I’ve been in a fortunate position. It’s just. When you get in a groove, things can just take you,” he said.

While the modesty is sweet, it’s taken a lot more than luck to get Amodio where he is. Jeopardy! isn’t a dice-rolling game, after all, and he’s had to answer a variety of trivia questions about all sorts of topics and do that better than his competitors for 33 straight games.

He also noted that he tries not to let the pressure of the winning streak get to him while he’s playing. He tries to take everything “one question at a time.”

Amodio has Had Anything But Luck When it Comes to the Current ‘Jeopardy!’ Hosting Debacle

While Amodio has kept his head held high and insisted that the rotating hosts on top of the recent scandal with now-ousted appointed host Mike Richards has been fine for him, it’s hard to deny that Amodio has been in an interesting position as a player. Right now, Amodio’s record winning streak is being near overshadowed by the drama surrounding Jeopardy!‘s botched search for a host.

But he’s taking it all in stride and has noted that it doesn’t matter who’s hosting to him while he’s playing because the questions are still the same. He’s also managed to put a positive spin on all of the recent news around the show.

“I think more people are talking about Jeopardy! today than they would have been otherwise,” Amodio told The Washington Newsday. “It’s hardly shocking to me that the hosting selection has gotten so much attention. It’s a testimonial to ‘Jeopardy!’s’ importance.”

He also noted that trying to replace a job previously held by someone like Alex Trebek would be difficult no matter what.

“Our cultural identity is shaped by people like Alex Trebek. Alex is a revered figure, and moving on after the loss of a beloved symbol is never easy,” he continued.

Now, with his impressive win streak, Matt Amodio is giving people something else to talk about.
