‘Jeopardy!’ Host Mayim Bialik Responds to ‘SNL’ Sketch Poking Fun at Her, LeVar Burton

by Amy Myers

Jeopardy! host Mayim Bialik received what she deemed to be the “highest honor” – a shout-out in a Saturday Night Live sketch. Of course, if your name makes into an SNL bit, chances are that you’ll be the butt of a joke. Lucky for Bialik, though, the sitcom actress has a pretty good sense of humor. She laughed along as the show brought up the game show’s hosting debacle that finally ended with Bialik taking the reins.

“One of the highest honors – being mentioned on @nbcsnl !!!! Love this !!!! #SNL,” the Jeopardy! host tweeted.

In reality, SNL probably could have run an entire episode on Jeopardy!‘s hunt for a new host. From the rotating guest hosts to Mike Richard’s short appearance to finally choosing Bialik – there’s a lot of material to work with. Instead, though, we saw a snippet of the situation in the first sketch of the night which primarily focused on another huge scandal within the NFL.

In order to make up for some of Las Vegas Raiders’ Jon Gruden’s comments in his emails, Raiders owner Mark Davis (SNL’s Alex Moffat) announced that the organization found a new coach.

“I think we may have found a solution that makes everyone happy,” Davis said. “Someone even Twitter can get behind. Introducing our new head coach, LeVar Burton.”

Burton, most famous for his role as the host of the children’s TV show, Reading Rainbow, was at one point in the running for the gig on Jeopardy! Already experienced with hosting educational programs, Burton seemed like a natural fit for the game show. However, as time would tell, Bialik assumed the role, a decision that stunned many Jeopardy! fans.

“Suck on that, Mayim Bialik,” Burton (or rather, Kenan Thompson) said. “I am the supreme football host now.”

Former ‘Jeopardy!’ Champ Chimes in on ‘SNL’ Sketch

The Burton impersonator then asked for “offense” for $300.

“What is a handoff?” Thompson asked in Jeopardy! fashion. “I’m genuinely asking. I’m a theatre kid, you know?”

The SNL sketch ended with Thompson singing a parody of Reading Rainbow‘s theme song that went a little something like this:

Field goal in the sky
I am the head coach guy
Take a look in the playbook
We’re playing football.

Bialik wasn’t the only Jeopardy! star to appreciate the late-night comedy show’s take on the hosting situation. Former champ Matt Amodio chimed in on her post, naming Thompson as one of the most talented impressionists among the SNL cast.

“Kenan probably has spot-on impressions of all the guest hosts, the man is hilarious!” the 38-time champ wrote.

Hopefully for Jeopardy! stars and fans, this won’t be the only mention of the show’s past problems. Perhaps they’ll even invite Bialik herself to do a few sketches with them.
