Tonight is a big night for Jeopardy! It is night one of the brand new Professors Tournament.
Yes, a brand new tournament. While we have seen high schoolers, high school teachers, college students, and more take the stage. Now, those in higher education will get a turn. A variety of subjects and areas of study will be represented.
Ahead of the premiere of the tournament, Jeopardy! threw out a sneak peek video on Twitter. Check it out below.
Mayim Bialik is the host of this special event that will run from December 6th to the 17th. There will be 15 contestants that will all be entered into the quarterfinal automatically. So, five winners will get auto bids to the semi-finals and along with four others. Then they will all compete for a chance at $100,000 and the title of champion. That’s a pretty good deal.
As Bialik said in the Jeopardy! video, “It’s competition, to the highest degree!” This is going to be a test of departments and areas of study. Will it be the chemistry professor that pulls off the win for STEM? Or will it be literature or history that prevails? Not to mention the institutional bragging rights. Every school represented would love to say they had the top professor of the tournament.
Mayim Bialik Excited About New Tournament
Ahead of the beginning of the tournament, Bialik talked about the experience of hosting it. The episodes are prerecorded, so she will be looking back on things as the show premiers. While it is a competition, players were united in their roles there.
“It was an unbelievable thrill to see so many brilliant professors from all kinds of schools and backgrounds come together on the Jeopardy! stage,” she said. “There was a sense of kinship and academic camaraderie among the group, along with a healthy dose of competitiveness. That energy made the inaugural Professors Tournament incredibly special.”
While this is a brand new tournament, it isn’t the only new tourney coming. That’s right, Jeopardy! has more in store in the new year.
‘Jeopardy! National College Championship’
Coming in February of next year, Jeopardy! will start another brand new tournament. This will be the National College Championship. These will be one-hour episodes and the tournament will take place throughout most of the short month.
This is going to be a huge tournament with 36 competitors. This could be a warmup for March Madness this year. With so many players, there will surely be more than one star among them. There’s a lot of good things on the horizon for Jeopardy! fans. With Ken Jennings on hosting duties until the end of the year in the regular show, Amy Schneider’s great run, and these new tournaments, what isn’t there to love?
