Chris Meloni’s Elliot Stabler has proven irresistible since returning on Law & Order: OC. He’s captured the heart of Tamara Taylor’s Angela Wheatley, the ex-wife of his nemesis Richard Wheatley (Dylan McDermott). Taylor talked about her character’s connection to the longtime Law & Order favorite.
She claims things would be better for both Angela and Stabler if these feelings didn’t exist. But we all know that’s not how emotions work. And can we really even blame her? Chris Meloni’s iconic Law & Order: OC character has been stealing hearts for years.
His decades-long chemistry with Mariska Hargitay’s Benson from SVU continues to tease fans. He slept with Flutura—the wife of Albanian gangster Albi Briscu (Vinnie Jones)—while undercover. And don’t forget he was married to Kathy (Isabel Gillies) from the beginning of his time on SVU in the late 1990s.
All of this is to say Angela’s not exactly crazy for feeling the way she does about Elliot Stabler. But that doesn’t change the fact that she very well may be responsible for Kathy Stabler’s death. She mistakenly blamed Elliot for killing her son. Now her ex-husband awaits trial for Kathy’s murder. Yeah, things are messy, to say the least. In an interview with PopCulture, she discussed the nature of her connection to Stabler.
“There’s definitely an undeniable connection with Stabler that I think they would probably both prefer wasn’t there. I think it would make life a lot easier for both of them if they didn’t have that sort of inexplicable, messy little connection that they do,” said Taylor.
Angela’s connection to Stabler adds pressure as she prepares to testify against Richard Wheatley in the December 9 crossover event between Law & Order: OC and SVU. Still recovering from multiple assassination attempts, she wants to be a valuable witness.
Chalk Up the Connection Between Angela and Stabler to the Storytelling Style of ‘Law & Order: OC’
Longtime Law & Order fans generally recognize the shows from the franchise as procedural. Each episode picks up a different case and finds our familiar characters responding to the new situation.
Wolf Entertainment changed that formula up when Chris Meloni returned to the franchise on Law & Order: OC. The series has experimented with an emphasis on season-long narrative arcs. And Angela Wheatley actor Tamara Taylor appreciates this form of storytelling. It has added depth to her character that otherwise might not be possible.
“I love this form of storytelling on network television …Usually, the episodes are standalone, and… you got a beginning, middle, and end. You don’t have to play them sequentially in any sort of sequential order. [But] this is really fun because you get to take a deeper dive into everyone’s world,” Taylor said in the interview.
