‘Law & Order: OC’ Star Tamara Taylor Explains How Dylan McDermott Tries to ‘Amuse Himself’ Playing Wheatley

by Megan Molseed

During Law & Order: Organized Crime’s first season, former SVU detective Elliot Stabler spent most of his time trying to collect enough evidence to prove that crime-boss Richard Wheatley was behind his wife’s death.

It’s no doubt that Dylan McDermott’s Law & Order: Organized Crime (OC) character, Richard Wheatley, is a terribly evil character. However, the return of Dylan McDermott to the series is likely to be something the Law & Order: OC stars are excited to see.

After all, McDermott’s Wheatley was a big part of the beginning of the brand new series that brought Christopher Meloni’s Elliot Stabler back to the Law & Order universe.

In fact, notes one of McDermott’s OC costars, Dylan McDermott is a lot of fun to have on set.

During a recent interview, Law & Order: OC’s Tamara Taylor discussed the unique acting style Dylan McDermott brings to the set.

“He looks for where he can amuse himself,” Taylor says of Dylan McDermott’s behind-the-scenes activity.

“And he says, ‘If you can amuse yourself, the audience is with you. If you are bored, everybody else is going to be bored with your performance,'” the actress adds.

‘Law & Order: OC’ Brings Some Complicated Storylines

In the first season of Law & Order: OC, Tamara Taylor starred as Angela Wheatley, Richard Wheatley’s ex-wife.

Things got awfully complicated, however, between the Law & Order characters. As the season unfolds, Angela begins to develop feelings for Elliot Stabler. Stabler, of course, is the detective determined to take her ex-husband down. Not to mention, Stabler had his sights set on Wheatley in the first place because the criminal was behind the murder of his wife, Kathy.

This, of course, meant Tamara Taylor shared quite a bit of screen-time with both of the Law & Order: OC leading men.

“I feel like I’ve grown, getting to play with both of them because Dylan’s way into his character is almost the antithesis of what Chris does,” Taylor says of the experience.

According to Taylor, McDermott’s goal onset is to find his amusement in any way he can. The actor, Taylor says, is always trying to find a way to “make himself laugh.”

“He’ll sing a random tune,” the Law & Order: OC star says.

“Add a strange line, decide his prop use is going to be really sort of uncomfortable and off-putting.” Tamara Taylor adds.

Dylan McDermott Brings Back Richard Wheatley

Of course, this tactic makes quite a bit of sense since Wheatley has displayed some chaotic behavior. The character would often lose his cool in an episode. But then Wheatley would become eerily calm and happy when his crimes went off without a hitch.

As the first season of the popular NBC drama comes to a close, Dylan McDermott’s Richard Wheatley is sent to jail for a long time.

But, we all had our sneaky suspicions he would be back. Now, Wheatley has returned to the series. This return comes as he prepares to stand trial for the murder of Elliot Stabler’s wife, Kathy.
