The ‘Law & Order: SVU’ 500th Episode Party Looked Like an Absolute Blast

by Suzanne Halliburton

What’s the best way to celebrate the 500th episode of Law & Order: SVU?

We’ll go with traditional. Cake and cupcakes pair nicely with most anything.

The Law & Order: SVU social media team posted a photo of Mariska Hargitay (Olivia Benson) and Peter Scanavino (Dominick Carisi). The two stars are standing behind the carb table, the one stacked with a three deck cake and lots of cupcakes. Hargitay also is holding up a dark gray t-shirt. It features the shows tag line “These are their stories” emblazoned over the No. 500.

The caption: “Heard you needed an excuse to expand your wardrobe. Commemorate a monumental moment in #SVU history with the limited edition 500 tee. “

Law & Order: SVU Will Bring Back Benson Love Interest for No. 500

This season’s Law & Order: SVU, along with its sister show, Organized Crime, has a running theme through it. Will Benson and Elliot Stabler (Christopher Meloni) ever get together? The 500th episode may pull Benson in another direction. At the very least, it pushes a past love interest into her present.

That’s why show producers added character Burton Lowe, played by Aidan Quinn. He took a break from playing Theodore Roosevelt in a series for HBO Max to be part of the Law & Order: SVU cast for the 500th episode.

“I play an old friend of Olivia’s who comes back with a cold case he needs help from her on,” Quinn told the New York Post. “And that rekindles some of the things from our relationship when we were younger. Mariska was great; we had some really intense scenes together and she just hits it out of the park.

“There were a couple of times where I thought she had cut the scene and then realized, ‘Oh god, no, that’s her line.’ She was so fresh and real. It literally took my breath away.”

Quinn’s Lowe is brought in by another former character, Nick Amaro, who is played by Danny Pino. Writers added the Amaro character in season 13 after Christopher Meloni left the series because of a contract dispute with NBC. The 500th episode will be Pino’s 95th.

Peter Hermann will reprise his role as defense attorney Trevor Langan. He’s Hargitay’s real-life husband. The two met while doing the show. They married in 2004 and now are the parents of three children.

And, Dann Florek returns as Donald Cragen. He played one of the original characters when Law & Order: SVU started in 1999. But Florek left the series in 2015. Preview clips from the episode show Benson talking to Cragen via a video call. Meanwhile, Meloni isn’t listed among the cast for No. 500. But he is shown in at least one flashback.

The episode is this Thursday. See how many familiar faces you can spot in this clip:
