A Law & Order: SVU line is being drawn in the sand. You either want to see Mariska Hargitay and Chris Meloni’s characters finally seal the deal, or you’re rooting for Benson to get together with defense attorney Rafael Barba.
So what’ll it be? Are you Team Bensler? Or Team Barson? Maybe you just want to wait and see what the Law & Order: SVU/Organized Crime crossover event has in store before you make your decision. And hey, that’s not a bad approach.
But many longtime SVU fans have been waiting years to see former partners Elliot Stabler and Olivia Benson take their relationship to the next level. On the other hand, some fans haven’t and maybe never will forgive Chris Meloni for leaving the show behind in 2011. They hitched their wagon to the 2012 cast addition Raúl Esparza, who played Rafael Barba.
Barba and Benson never gave a relationship a shot, but fans picked up on some chemistry between them and haven’t looked back.
“I always thought Barba and Benson had such a beautiful platonic relationship. I’ve been rewatching the Barba episodes, and now I totally see where Barson shippers are coming from. The most recent one I watched was when Noah is kidnapped, and the way Barba is with Benson makes me think he’s absolutely in love with her,” writes Reddit user Mansfiend.
A relationship between Barba and Benson hadn’t occurred to this particular Redditor before recently. And we hate to say it, but the promos for the upcoming Law & Order: SVU event don’t paint their future in a great light.
It looks like Barba’s return is only coming with him defending Richard Wheatley in the trial of Kathy Stabler’s murder. Needless to say, that’s a pretty hardcore betrayal of both Benson and Stabler.

Forget any potential romance between Benson and Barba. If it happens, it’s going to have to wait until after Barba wraps up his defense of Organized Crime villain Richard Wheatley. He has more pressing things on his mind at the moment, like how he’s going to contend with Carisi leading the prosecution.
Carisi got the better of Barba when they last met in the courtroom. Can he beat his former colleague this time around? Ayanna Bell actor Danielle Truitt broke down what we can expect from the trial.
“Like with any trial, the defense and the prosecution are definitely gonna play a certain narrative, and it’s whatever narrative sticks with the jury best. Carisi is a great lawyer, and so is Barba. And they both are really good at giving a certain perspective to the audience. So we’ll see which one works,” Truitt told TV Line.
