‘Law & Order: SVU’ Fans Debate Nick Amaro’s Exit

by Megan Molseed

Since the hit drama series Law & Order: SVU premiered in 1999, viewers have seen a lot of favorite characters come and go.

One of the biggest storylines in which this occurs is when Danny Pino’s Nick Amaro arrives on the series. While a great addition to the team, Amaro was replacing Olivia Benson’s beloved SVU partner Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) after his abrupt and unexpected exit.

Eventually, however, viewers and Amaro’s fellow Law & Order: SVU detectives grew fond of the new detective. So much so, that some fans aren’t even entirely clear as to why the SVU detective exited the series after only four seasons.

One of these viewers took to Reddit recently to ask if any other Law & Order: SVU fans felt Nick Amaro’s exit from the series was just as abrupt as they thought it was.

“On a rewatch binge and I swear I blinked and Nick was just gone,” the Redditor shared in a recent comment.

“He left because he wanted to progress in NYPD,” one commenter explains in response to the question.

“He was thinking of taking the sergeant exam a few episodes before his leaving,” the Redditor continues in the response.

‘Law & Order: SVU’ Fans Discuss Amaro’s Abrupt Exit

This Reddit user adds that Mariska Hargitay’s Law & Order: SVU character, Olivia Benson had been told by SVU higher-ups that Nick Amaro would likely not have the potential for promotion within the NYPD.

This, the commenter says, is because of Amaro’s shaky history on the force.

“Tucker told Liv cause of his history, there was no way he’d ever get promoted in NYPD,” the post continues.

Of course, when looking at his options, the Redditor adds, Danny Pino’s Nick Amaro considered his family when deciding what his next step would be.

“His ex wife and daughter, and ex gf and son were all moving to California,” the commenter explains. “So he decided to move to be with them all.”

One commenter feels that the Law & Order: SVU writers went too heavy with Danny Pino’s character in the popular NBC drama.

And, the Redditor says, there was only so far they could go with the character. And soon, he had to exit the series.

“They didn’t know what to do with Nick in his last season in my opinion,” the Reddit user says.

“They overdid it with his personal issues in the previous season and wrote themselves into the corner,” the commenter adds. “At least he got somehow satisfying farewell story.”

Fans Loved Amaro’s Return

Of course, this wouldn’t be a good Amaro Reddit thread mentioning the recent guest appearance on the popular NBC drama.

“This season’s appearance was amazing,” the Redditor exclaims.

“I really like this side of him,” the writer continues.

And, the Law & Order: SVU fan notes, this appearance likely left the option open for future appearances on the series.

“They left the door open for more guest starring,” the Reddit user says.

“If Barba survives his comeback as a character to care for not that they would kill him,” the commenter adds. “I hope they will get to meet again. Cause the fire and chemistry between them is sorely missed. ”
