‘Law & Order: SVU’ Star Ice-T Doesn’t Think He Would’ve Liked Role on Show When He Was Younger

Musician and Law & Order: SVU star Ice-T doesn’t think he would’ve liked his role on the show when he was younger. Ice T is known for both his musical work and his role in Law & Order: SVU as Detective Finn Totuola. He’s been a key part of the series for almost two decades and is one of the main faces of the show.

But it looks like young Ice-T wouldn’t love what he does now. The younger version of himself probably wouldn’t have loved the repetitive nature of it. In an interview with Black Film, he discussed his relationship with stability when asked about how a job on a show that’s lasted so long molded him as a person.

“How does it mold me as a person? It’s the most — how would I say it — [the most] consistent job I’ve ever had. The most normal [job I’ve had],” he said. “It’s like having a place you live [in], go to work, [it’s] part of that. You know, for a long time, [after] being a musician and having to travel all over the world, it’s [nice] being able to act in one place. It’s a great thing you know?”

A Young Ice-T Would Have Hated Being Stagnant

Shows like Law & Order: SVU bring a lot of stability. Consistent hours and good pay are a great bonus. But when Ice-T was young, he would have hated that stagnant feeling.

“I don’t know when I was really young I might not have liked it. It might have been too stagnant for me,” he said.

Now, however, Ice-T is incredibly grateful for the consistency. Clearly. The show is in it’s 23rd season, so it would be hard to stick around if you didn’t love what you were doing. Not to mention, he seems close with his fellow castmates. This is especially true for Mariska Hargitay, who he’s known for years.

“At this time in my life, I don’t mind being able to go home every night to the same place and have a home,” he said. “As far as doing the job, how has it molded me? I think it’s made me a better actor. Like being able to act every day.”

Totuola is a massive part of the series. As a close friend of Olivia Benson and a good detective in his own right, fans of Law & Order: SVU love the energy that Ice T brings to the show. He also had a huge role in the latest season finale.

If you want to catch Ice T on Law & Order: SVU, the show airs on Thursday at 9/8 CT on NBC. It looks like it’ll be the last Law & Order: SVU episode of 2021, so you won’t want to miss it.
