“Law & Order: SVU” certainly doesn’t prioritize romance or love in any sense. Rather, the cast of the popular procedural drama is more focused on solving incredibly gruesome sexually-oriented crimes.

Meanwhile, while working on the show, one couple was able to find love between the onscreen tragedies of sexual assault, child abuse, and intimate partner violence. It also happened to be the star of “Law & Order: SVU” herself, Mariska Hargitay.

Mariska Hargitay Found Love on ‘Law & Order: SVU’

She has played Captain Olivia Benson on the show since it first aired in 1999. This makes her character the longest-running primetime drama character in television history. She has dedicated a lot of her life to her role in the series. She’s also gotten a lot out of it, both professionally and personally.

Hargitay actually met her husband, Peter Hermann, on the set of “Law & Order: SVU.” He had joined the case in 2002 as the recurring character Trevor Langan, a defense attorney. He kept his role for about 30 episodes during the course of the series. Most recently, he returned for the show’s landmark 500th episode, which featured a plethora of characters important in Benson’s past.

After meeting on the show, Hermann and Hargitay got married in 2004. They have since also had three children together — August, Andrew, and Amaya. The couple keeps their private life mostly out of the spotlight.

In June of 2018, she opened up to US Weekly about how she has learned to balance her personal life and professional career. “It’s hard. I’m not going to say it’s easy, it’s hard. I’m learning to [balance]. I try to be super present with where I am. When I’m at work, I’m at work. When I’m with my kids, I’m with my kids,” Hargitay said.

Christopher Meloni Talks Hargitay’s Romance

As it turns out, Christopher Meloni, who plays Eliott Stabler on “Law & Order: Organized Crime,” knew all along that Hermann and Hargitay would end up together.

“After they’d been dating a long time, she came in one day and she was crushed. She goes, ‘Peter and I had a really deep, long conversation. We cried, and I just don’t think it’s going to work.’ And she’s sobbing, and the whole time, the [thought] bubble in my head was just: ‘You’ll be married within five months.’ That’s all I was thinking. I knew. I knew,” Meloni said to People regarding their relationship.

In addition to meeting Hermann through the show, Hargitay also got a great friend out of Meloni. In fact, when Meloni and his wife, Sherman Williams, had their daughter Sophia in 2001, they asked Hargitay to be the godmother.

Despite the fact that Meloni left the show in 2011, they remained exceptionally close. They picked up right where they left off when he returned to star in “Law & Order: Organized Crime.”
