We truly do love Lucy. Lucille Ball’s legacy has made her and each of her projects iconic pieces of television history. Especially for her contribution to the series that started it all, I Love Lucy.

This series became so beloved among American audiences that Lucille Ball has even developed a favorite episode of the groundbreaking television series.

When asked if she has one favorite memory from her time starring in the groundbreaking sitcom series, Lucille Ball is quick to note that she doesn’t have a single favorite moment. Really, the actress notes in a 1984 interview with Entertainment Tonight, she has about “eight or ten” favorite moments.

But, while her favorite moments starring alongside Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, and William Frawley in I Love Lucy may be numerous, there is one specific episode that Lucille Ball treasures above the rest.

“The happiest moment, I suppose was the baby show,” Lucille Ball says in the throwback interview.

Of course, the actress is referring to the I Love Lucy episode titled Lucy Goes to the Hospital.

Lucille Ball’s Real-Life Connection To Her Favorite ‘I Love Lucy’ Moment

In this episode, Lucille Ball’s Lucy Ricardo prepares to give birth to her first child.

Clearly, this is a big moment between Lucille Ball’s Lucy Ricardo and her husband, Desi Arnaz’s Ricky Ricardo as their family grows on screen.

However, this memorable television moment also signified a big life change between Ball and Arnaz as this was the final episode Lucille Ball would film before the birth of the couple’s son in real life, Desi Arnaz Jr.

“I’d have to mention that,” the iconic redheaded actress says of the episode in the ET interview.

“Because I was really having a baby,” the actress explains.

“It was really my last show before I had the baby and it was for real,” Lucille Ball continues. “And it was the most exciting thing in my life.”

Making Television History

In the episode, Ricky Ricardo and his and Lucy’s close friends and neighbors Fred and Ethel (Vance and Frawley) prepare their roles for when Lucy goes into labor.

They each calmly rehearse the part they will play as the labor begins. And the crew works together to develop plans to get Lucy to the hospital in time.

However, chaos ensues as once Lucy goes into labor, all three members of Lucy’s support team begin to freak out.

At the time of its airing, I Love Lucy was the top-rated sitcom on television. A groundbreaking seventy-one percent of American television sets were tuned in to the wildly popular series; as Lucy and Ricky prepare to become parents for the first time.

This episode, Lucy Goes to the Hospital was the highest-rated episode of I Love Lucy during its entire run.
