Country music superstar Blake Shelton showed off a cherished patriotic helmet he helped design with driver Jimmie Johnson. And he called it possibly the most meaningful gift of all.

Johnson wore the helmet when he competed at the Indy 500. On Sunday, Johnson finished fifth at the Hy-Vee Salute to Farmers 300 at Iowa Speedway. It was his best finish to date racing in the NTT IndyCar Series. Johnson won seven NASCAR series championships before he started open wheel racing in 2021.

Blake Shelton posted three photos of the helmet on his Twitter feed. One showed Johnson wearing the helmet. One side featured Shelton’s brother and father in their military uniforms. The other side showed Johnson’s grandfather.

Shelton wrote: “I have been blessed in my lifetime to have received some incredible gifts and awards and things that will always mean a lot to me. But on a personal level this just might top them all. Thank you Jimmie Johnson. It is a an honor and a privilege to call you my friend.”

And Johnson replied: “Thanks my friend, the honor and privilege was all mine.”

Blake Shelton and Johnson, who are long-time friends, collaborated to design the special helmet on behalf of the American Legion. Johnson unveiled the helmet on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon back in May,

The helmet honors those serving in the military and all veterans. As you can tell from the helmet, the families of both men were well represented in the military. The helmet also featured American Legion branding.

In an interview with People, Blake Shelton mentioned how he wanted Johnson to stick around NASCAR for at least another season. But he’s impressed with his friend’s results in IndyCar racing.

“Well, I’m just happy that he’s driving,” Blake Shelton told the magazine. “That he’s racing and that he’s happy as he can be right now. We were just talking before we started doing this, he’s having a blast.

“I mean, any NASCAR fan is bummed out and missing him in the sport.” Shelton said. “Especially because the year that he retired was the year that no fans could come out to the races [because of COVID-19 restrictions]. I know that fans would’ve loved to have had a chance to take in his last season. But, at the same time, he’s got his goals and dreams, and he got to go do it.”

So what did the fans think of Johnson’s gift to Blake Shelton? One replied to the country star: “Incredible gift… You deserve it… what a true friend you got there.”

Another wrote: “I love this. I saw the backstory of you and Jimmy helping with the design and the fact that it has your brother and dad included. What a special gift. So happy for you.”
