When NCIS returns with a new episode, the show will feature a guest star with a connection to the world’s most popular Christmas song.

We’ll explain. If you sang White Christmas at any time during this holiday season, you’re carrying on a tradition started by songwriter Irving Berlin. But it was Bing Crosby who gave the song its emotional soul. Crosby, the famed actor/singer, gave the first public performance of White Christmas on Christmas Day, 1941. He sang of a man yearning for a past holiday, where treetops glistened and children listened for sleigh bells in the snow. The nation was fraught with anxiety as it dealt with the aftermath of Pearl Harbor 18 days before.

According to the Guinness Book of World Records, White Christmas now is considered the most popular song in the world. It’s sold more than 50 million copies. (We’re still getting to the NCIS part, promise).

“I think people identify him with Christmas just as much as Jesus and Santa Claus,” said Nathaniel Crosby, Bing’s son, as he cracked a joke with Billboard in a 2017 interview.

“We have some downloads of dad’s stuff we play,” Nathaniel said. “And if I have a couple of tequilas you’ll hear me try to chime in.”

So what does Bing Crosby and White Christmas have to do with NCIS and its Monday episode called Pledge of Allegiance? Check out the guest stars. Denise Crosby portrays Secretary of the Navy Hattie Taylor. Crosby’s father was Dennis Crosby. And he was the second oldest child of Bing and wife, Dixie Lee. The 64-year-old Denise Crosby reportedly didn’t have a relationship with her grandfather. She was 19 when he died. Her parents never married and her mother had to sue Dennis for child support.

NCIS Fans Probably Have Seen Crosby Before. We’ll Explain

NCIS fans probably will turn on Monday’s episode and swear they’ve seen Denise Crosby before. And they probably have. She was a guest star on JAG in 2002. The show helped launch NCIS the following year. Crosby also appeared in an episode of NCIS: Los Angeles as a U.S. Marshal.

If you’re a Trekkie, you know her as Tasha Yar in Star Trek: The Next Generation. She left the series after a season. Writers had her die at the hands of Armus. But she returned as a guest star when the show wrote alternate timeline episodes. She even played Sela, the half-Romulan daughter of Tasha Yar in another life. Crosby hosted and produced two documentaries Trekkies and Trekkies 2.

For NCIS fans, here’s what’s happening Monday. The show returns after a five-week holiday hiatus with a new episode. As we said earlier, the episode is called Pledge of Allegiance.

Here’s what we know about the NCIS hour. The plot summary from CBS says “NCIS is called in when Navy Chief Warrant Officer Rafi Nazar (Artur Zai Benson) is suspected of trying to sell stolen classified Navy software used to pilot combat drones.” We imagine the Secretary of the Navy (or SecNav in NCIS vernacular) has a vested interest in keeping drone technology secret.

Rocky Carroll, who portrays Leon Vance, directed the episode. Stay tuned.
