While the characters and plotlines of NCIS shows are typically the big talking points, the music sets the mood. A recent interview with the NCIS: Hawai’i composer explored the motifs and character dynamics between Jane Tennant and Ernie Malik.

NCIS: Hawai’i composer Tree Adams sat down with Show Snob to discuss an array of topics about the show. One of the more interesting subjects was character themes, such as those between Jane and Ernie. Show Snob asked about how they differ from one another, and Adams happily obliged. ” Jane Tennant, who is our female lead, she’s the first female leader of an NCIS franchise which is kind of exciting to be part of that. She has a tough side to her, she’s a badass, which is kind of fun in some of these action sequences, like the first episode when she jumps off a cliff.”

Adams continues, “There are all these heroic things she’s capable of, but she’s also a single mom, and when you see her at home, there is a warmer side, so we had some warmer and charming themes for her that bring you in.”

Meanwhile, Ernie being the unique tech wizard he is has a very different feel to his motif. “He’s really quirky and fun. There is a palette we created to accompany his flavor, I guess it’s about being quirky and fun and underscoring his intelligence, his superpower.”

Adams also discussed character dynamics and relationships. He notes being as excited to see where they go as the actors themselves. “There is a bit of a romantic thing brewing Tennant and Milius, they’re sort of rivals at first, but I don’t know where that is going to go. It’s fun to tease those out.”

Why Vanessa Lachey Says She’s ‘Honored’ to Play Jane Tennant on ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’

Vanessa Lachey loves her character on NCIS: Hawai’i, to say the least. However, she doesn’t just love Jane Tennant, she stated it’s an “honor” to play her.

“It’s an honor to play her,” Lachey bluntly stated. “There are females in NCIS out there so I love this, you know starting to make it the norm.” The actress adds she adores Tennant’s strength and her headstrong attitude. It’s easy to see what she means. Tennant is both a doting, strong mother and an astute NCIS agent who is firm, but considerate.

“I love that she doesn’t take no for an answer,” Lachey continued. “There’s a lot about her I love. And that’s why I fell in love with this character.”

While we’re only two episodes into the series at this point, NCIS: Hawai’i seems to be off to a great start. The first and second episodes boasted more than 5 million viewers, so hopefully, that trend continues.
