‘NCIS: Hawai’i’: How Vanessa Lachey’s Husband Says Family Adjusted to Her Taking Lead Role

by Madison Miller

For Vanessa Lachey, landing the gig as the Special Agent in Charge of the “NCIS: Hawai’i” team was a major career win.

Not only is her character, Jane Tennant, the first woman in charge of an “NCIS” team in franchise history, but the rookie show has been performing decently in ratings so far as well. For example, TV Line reported that last week the show brought in 5 million viewers and a 0.5 demo rating.

The also has a full-season order on CBS now, which means the “NCIS: Hawai’i” crew will be on the sandy beaches for at least a full season.

‘NCIS: Hawai’i’ Star’s Family Adapts to Life Changes

In order to support his wife, Nick Lachey and the couple’s entire family moved to Hawaii with Vanessa Lachey. The two have three younger children together. Although this is a major change and adjustment for the family, Nick Lachey was more than happy to do it.

“It’s an incredible honor for her. She’s embraced the responsibility of what that means to take on that kind of a role and she’s loving it. [She] worked [her] entire career for this moment. This is her moment, which is why we’re all here to embrace this opportunity with her and to see what she’s doing and see how she prepares for this day in and day out, how much she cares about her castmates and crew and the way she takes care of them. She’s an incredible person and this is her time to shine. It’s very cool to be on the sidelines watching that happen,” he said during an interview with ET.

Although Vanessa Lachey has been acting for years, “NCIS: Hawai’i” is by far the biggest role she’s landed to date. With such a big role comes a lot of changes for the family. However, Nick told the news outlet that his kids seem to have adjusted to the sandy beach life just fine.

“You wake up to this every day. You look out the window and see this and surfers and waves and sunrise. It’s paradise. You worry about your kids, and they just hit the ground running. They love it here, they love their school, they love their new friends. When you look at the whole thing, it couldn’t have gone much smoother than it’s gone,” Lachey said. From the sound of it, the Lachey kids have had to adjust to what feels like a vacation each day.

Balancing Work and Family Life

It’s not all easy and stress-free beach life for the Lachey family, however.

Vanessa Lachey is kept pretty busy filming as the lead on “NCIS: Hawai’i.” She then has to come home and balance her family life at the same time. She opened up about some of these challenges during an interview with Reveal.

Even though her family moved to Hawaii with her, it can still be hard to squeeze in some consistent family time.

“Nick and I had long, deep conversations about what it would mean for our family. Ultimately, we said, ‘This is a chance to expose them to this beautiful island and different people and cultures.’ The first question we ask is, ‘Is this good for our family?’ Then we figure out how to make it work. I wish Zooms and Facetime were easy, but the kids fight over who gets screen time with Mommy. It’s just not fun. So, Nick sends me videos,” Lachey said during the interview.
