NCIS: Hawai’i star Vanessa Lachey plays a mother on the hit series, but she’s also a mother in real life. The actress recently opened about how she understands herself as a mother, and how not having her mother in her own life influenced how she approaches parenthood.
The actress plays Jane Tennant on the hit series and is the first woman cast in the role of the lead in the history of the NCIS franchise. She also is releasing a book called Life From Scratch filled with recipes, personal anecdotes, and parenting tips.
“I’ve never really talked about the fact that my mother isn’t in my life, but it doesn’t mean I can’t be a great mom,” she said. “One I had three kids, I went through understanding myself as a mother. I already felt like I understood myself as a woman, then as a minority woman, and then as a wife and as a friend, and now as a mother.”
“I felt that I was confident and comfortable enough to say “yes I did not have a mom helping to raise me and pass down lessons but that’s okay because look what I’ve done for my family,” she said.
The NCIS: Hawai’i actress hopes that the parenting tips in Life From Scratch will help any nervous mothers out there find their confidence.
“You too can write your own destiny,” she said. And that’s not just advice for people who don’t have mothers, but for anyone who wants to re-define themselves or heal from their past.
Vanessa Lachey Moved Her Family to Hawai’i For the ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’ Role
It’s always hard moving with kids, but Vanessa and her husband, Nick, moved to Hawai’i so she could play the role of Jane Tennant on NCIS: Hawai’i without having to go long periods without seeing her children. Interestingly, she plays a character who also balances a busy work schedule with her kids at home.
How Tennant defines herself as a mother could really help how she portrays Jane Tennant and her role as a Mother. Unlike Vanessa, however, Jane Tennant is a single mother. It makes things incredibly difficult for her, but so far, she’s been really managing that work-life balance and spending plenty of time with the kids at home.
Tennant has proven herself to be an absolute asset to the team, and in a recent episode even disobeyed orders in order to help a C.I.A agent in a tricky situation. Her care for others balanced with her dedication to her duties makes her an interesting character, but fans are excited to see more. After all, life has to be pretty difficult for Tennant. Hopefully, we’ll get to see more of that side of her as well.
NCIS: Hawai’i took a break for the Holidays, but it’ll be back next Monday, November 29th.
