NCIS: Hawai’i actress Vanessa Lachey just said that her mother’s absence in her life “still bothers” her. The actress recently became an author with the release of her book, Life from Scratch, which contains personal stories, recipes, and advice.

In a recent interview with ET leading up to the book’s release, Lachey talks about parenthood and how the absence of her mother in her life affected her while growing up.

“I’ve made the peace that I need to make to be able to speak about it and I think I made that peace because I now know the choices I’ve made as a mother and the things I will not do to my children,” she told the publication. “But I would be lying if I said it doesn’t still bother me and why it’s more fascinating than anything because she was the best mom until she left. She did everything for me. And my dad told me, she prayed and prayed she would have a baby girl and so all she wanted was a baby girl.”

The devastation of abandonment can be truly haunting, and Lachey has been very frank when talking about what that’s done to her perception of herself. Additionally, abandonment like that can leave people with unanswered questions.

“Did something happen that made you just shut out? That’s what I would want to know. But then you go back into [it and] you’ll just be harping about it for the rest of your life and you’re not moving forward, you’re holding on to the past,” she said.

But Lachey tries her absolute best to let go of any negativity and grudges that sometimes come coupled with these questions. Her entire philosophy in her book has to do with having a positive outlook even in situations that are difficult. This is one example of that in action.

“You can’t help what thoughts come into your head. But you can help how you react to them and what you do about them. And I don’t react on them and I don’t hold negativity or grudges, and then I move forward in a positive way to break that mold and cycle for my kids.”

Vanessa Lachey, as she mentioned, is now a mother of her own. Now living in Hawai’i with her husband and kids, Lachey is an actress and author who is determined to break the cycles of her past. This is what laid the groundwork for Life From Scratch and what allowed her to pursue the leading role on NCIS: Hawai’i.

If you want to order Life From Scratch, the book is out now, and if you want to catch Vanessa Lachey on NCIS: Hawai’i, new episodes air on Mondays at 10/9 CT on CBS.
