Today (November 29th), NCIS: Hawai’i star Vanessa Lachey handed out a recipe that she left out of her new book. It’s her and her husband’s official Thanksgiving cocktail. Don’t worry, you don’t have to wait until next year to try it out.
On Tuesday (November 30th), Vanessa Lachey’s Life From Scratch hits bookshelves worldwide. In the memoir, the actress writes about creating unique family traditions. She includes stories about life with Nick Lachey, tales from her past, and a couple of tips about staying connected with loved ones. And among the pages, she also included some of her favorite recipes.
But as she shared with ET, she didn’t add her favorite Thanksgiving drink—a White Russian.
The drink is pretty simple, which is why she opted to leave it out of the book. Vanessa said that all you need is “a box of Kahlúa and a little bit of cream” to make it. But the cocktail is a sweet memory from her and husband Nick Lachey’s first Thanksgiving as a couple. And she wanted to share the story with her fans.
The Story Behind ‘NCIS: Hawai’i’ Actress Vanessa Lachey’s Thanksgiving Cocktail Tradition
In 2006, when Vanessa and Nick were a brand new couple celebrating their first Thanksgiving, Vanessa made her future husband a promise.
The NCIS: Hawai’i starlet told him, “I will always make Thanksgiving the best time for you” because it is his favorite holiday.
When they went home after eating their first turkey feast, Vanessa wanted to start a new tradition. So, she decided to make a special cocktail for Nick.
“But if I am being real, I don’t know how to make cocktails,” she admitted to ET. However, she did know how to whip up a White Russian because it was the one and only drink her father made when she was a child.
“My dad does not drink, but he had one drink every year on Christmas Eve and it was a White Russian,” she shared.
“Just to feel fancy,” Vanessa Lachey walked into her kitchen and made a White Russian for Nick and herself. And it was delicious, so she made another—and then another. And by the middle of the night, the couple was feeling a little tipsy and having a great time.
“Three White Russians later, we were decorating for Christmas and I am like, ‘Isn’t this cute? This is our thing now,'” she continued.
And fifteen years later, Vanessa and Nick Lachey still enjoy a few of their legendary cocktails each Thanksgiving.
“I did it this year on Thanksgiving night,” she continued. “Before the next day when we decorate, we toast a White Russian to each other.”
