From the moment we met Sam Hanna and Grisha “G” Callen, we knew this NCIS: Los Angeles duo was more than just a couple of co-stars. With over 12 seasons worth of episodes together, actors Chris O’Donnell and LL Cool J have a very real bromance, both on-camera and off. Their chemistry on the show feels like an organic partnership built from trust, friendship and respect. And that’s exactly how they would describe their relationship in real life.
Recently, the NCIS: Los Angeles star chatted with Studio 10 about his success with the show and dynamic with select co-stars. Of course, LL Cool J was one of them. In the interview, O’Donnell explained that their connection was almost instantaneous.
“It was pretty quick,” O’Donnell told Craig Bennet. “I think, at first, we were both kind of curious, you know. ‘Who is this guy?'”
The NCIS: Los Angeles agent went on to explain that the two actors came from “two different worlds.”
However, that curiosity quickly blossomed into mutual respect and dedication to the show. O’Donnell explained that when the two first met, LL Cool J had “his earphones on the whole time.” While some might take that as a snub, O’Donnell saw that as a sign of his co-star’s devotion to his role. Oddly enough, the fellow NCIS: Los Angeles co-star later revealed that he was listening to one song on repeat – “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey.
“For the first month that I knew him, that’s all that he would listen to, over and over and over again,” the NCIS: Los Angeles star said.
‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Star Shares Hilarious Interaction with Co-Star
NCIS: Los Angeles fans can agree that of all of the characters on the show, Hanna and Callen have the best banter. Perhaps the show’s writers are just that good, but more likely, it’s because of the duo’s relationship when the cameras aren’t rolling.
O’Connell even admitted to Bennet that he now shares the same appreciation for chapstick as his co-star because of LL Cool J’s insistence on moisturization. He even pulled a stick out of his pocket to show his true dedication and bewilderment for the change in attitude.
More than just a source of personal care tips, LL Cool J also taught O’Connell that you don’t always have to accept what others have to say.
“There was this one time, I made some comment to him. And he just goes, ‘I don’t receive that,'” the NCIS: Los Angeles star recalled. “I go, ‘I didn’t even know that was an option.'”
Whether two special agents scaling the side of the building or just two co-stars bonding over chapstick brands, NCIS: Los Angeles is better series because of O’Connell and LL Cool J’s hilarious and genuine friendship.
