Who doesn’t love a little Kensi and Deeks romance in their lives? The “NCIS: Los Angeles” couple just celebrated a major milestone in their highly-anticipated parenthood journey following several letdowns in that territory over the course of their relationship. They may not be the perfect couple, but they do seem like a pretty good fit. And while that seems to be the general consensus of fans, not everyone is impressed.
A Reddit thread went viral earlier this year exposing some heavy criticisms of the “NCIS” franchise in general. The thread was titled “‘NCIS’ writers cannot write an interesting 3-dimensional woman to save the life of them.” Several fans cited their upset with the OG series which often seemed to pair strong female leads with a love interest. They cited several examples including Ziva and Tony. Here’s why Eric Christian Olsen thinks they’re wrong and how Kensi and Deeks’ relationship actually speaks to the “genius” of the show.
The ‘NCIS: Los Angeles’ Star Remembers a Pivotal Moment From the Season 4 Finale
It’s pretty hard to forget the blood-curdling screams, but if you don’t remember, Season 4 of “NCIS: Los Angeles” ended in a really dark place. Marcel Janvier betrayed Deeks and Sam who both got tortured by Isaak Sidorov as a result. And this low came after one of the greatest “highs” of Deeks’ life, finally planting a smooch on Kensi.
That’s where the magic lies, according to Eric Christian Olsen. He explained:
“That’s why it’s genius. That’s why Scott Gemmill and Shane Brennan and Frank [Military] are all geniuses. It’s like we can take them to that place and then tear his world apart. Let him fight to get back there. You know what I mean. You have that moment. We all have these. We can think back on our lives like when it made the most sense. When life made the most sense and relationships made the most sense. And, whatever happens, and we lose that, we spend the rest of our lives trying to get back to it.”
Why Deeks Finally ‘Made His Move’
In the same interview, Eric Christian Olsen let us into the head of Deeks and explained why he finally advanced his relationship with Kensi at that point.
“I think that you have that moment of clarity and I think we have this in our own lives which is just those perfect moments of clarity in which everything makes sense in the world. And, that was that. That was that moment. That was that kiss. And, that was that moment after that kiss. It’s just like that’s it. And, then we spend the rest of our lives trying to get back to that moment.”
