‘NCIS’: Some Fans Have Made Peace with Mark Harmon Leaving

by Thad Mitchell

Fans of the popular television series “NCIS” are slowly coming to terms with that Mark Harmon isn’t in the show’s future plans.

It came as quite a shock to “NCIS” watchers when they learned that Harmon’s character, Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs went his own way. Gibbs, who has been a mainstay on the show for years, made a bold move by choosing to remain in Alaska. His actions lead his protege and fellow “NCIS” agent, Timothy McGee, to head back to Washington D.C. by himself. Now, reports suggest that Harmon will appear on the show in the immediate future. Harmon’s name does still appear on the show’s credits as both an actor and a producer.

Having been on the air for nearly two decades, “NCIS” has actors and their characters come and go. The loss of Harmon and Gibbs, however, appears to be difficult for fans of the long-running show. Mark Harmon was the face of “NCIS,” having been with the show since the beginning. His presence was greatly valued by the show’s fan base, who had faith in Gibbs’ skills as a special agent. “NCIS” watchers talked among themselves about what Harmon’s exit from the show means in an “NCIS” SubReddit thread. Many of these fans express optimism about the show’s future without Harmon.

“When Gibbs started to get written off the show, I had doubts that they could produce good episodes without him,” a Redditor suggests. “I think that as long as the writers come up with interesting crimes to solve and don’t screw things up with love connections, the show will survive a few more seasons.”

Faith in “NCIS” writers is a common theme in the Reddit discussion. While Harmon may not ever be truly replaced, fans believe strong writing will ease the transition.

‘NCIS’ Fans Discuss What Show Will Look Like Without Gibbs

Believe it or not, some “NCIS” fans think the show might be better off without Mark Harmon.

“Honestly, as much as I love him, his character had become stale and should have left years ago,” a Reddit user writes.

Some fans even went as far as to say the show may have already run its course.

“Nope, NCIS is nearing the end,” another fan of the show says. And that is OK. 18 seasons and 3 (nearly 4) Spin-offs. And Hawai’i is not good at all.”

“NCIS” has had a couple of other major character shifts in the past few seasons. Veteran actor Gary Cole joined the cast for its 19th season. He plays FBI Agent Alden Park, who now serves as the team leader at NCIS with Gibbs gone. Katrina law also joins the cast, playing NCIS Special Agent Jessica Knight.

The absence of Mark Harmon and his character may take some time to get used to but fans of the are excited about the journey.
