You’re used to seeing SEAL Team star David Boreanaz taking names as Jason Hayes on the receiving end of the camera. But don’t underestimate his skills behind it either. Boreanaz has taken more than a few turns in the director’s chair during his five seasons with the show.

The SEAL Team star recently sat down to discuss the finer points of his directing process. And boy, if you thought playing the lead role on a successful TV show and directing a successful TV show were difficult jobs on their own, then David Boreanaz’s perspective is going to blow you away. Each of the eight times he’s acted as the director, the Jason Hayes actor has needed to be in character at the same time.

“If you’re strong enough in your conviction, and you believe in what you’re doing, it becomes so ingrained in you through the prep process of directing,” said Boreanaz. “Directing, now, is a reflection of the character that I’ve been playing here with Jason Hayes for five seasons. Now, it’s a reflection of his leadership skills, his strength in being able to lead his teams.”

‘SEAL Team’ Star David Boreanaz Is No Stranger to Acting and Directing at the Same Time

Jason Hayes actor David Boreanaz has been on and around sets of popular TV shows since the late 1990s. The first time he ever directed was in 2004 on an episode of the Buffy spinoff Angel. However, it wasn’t until he starred on Bones as Seeley Booth that he got some real reps in the director role.

From 2009 to 2017, David Boreanaz directed and starred in 11 episodes of Bones. The man knows a thing or two about what it takes to act and run the show at the same time.

“They kind of go hand in hand in a lot of ways,” Boreanaz continued in the Paramount+ Instagram video. “When the cameras are about to roll, and you are acting and directing at the same time, you have to trust that process, where you’ve done all the work. You know where it’s going. It’s in the hands of the camera operators. You have to give that up and tap into the character.”

Boreanaz tries to get as close as he can to his SEAL character, and it’s safe to say Navy SEALS are pretty good at multitasking. Just like Jason Hayes, Boreanaz is all about hustle and dedication to his craft.

“I pride myself on hard work, and I pride myself on the type of worker I am. And I think that reflects itself in what we see,” the SEAL Team star continued.
