“Seinfeld” star Julia Louis-Dreyfus is mourning the loss of the Bahamian-American actor and icon Sidney Poitier. Poitier passed away at age 94 last week, and is being remembered for his contributions to both acting and civil rights.

In a recent Twitter post, Dreyfus shares with the fans the story of when she first met the icon.

The meeting took place on the day of the 1969 moon landing. The “Seinfeld” star was only eight years old, but remembers the interaction to this day.

The ‘Seinfeld’ Star’s Story

“At 2 in the morning, my mom woke me up and, in our nightgowns, we went to the lobby of the Tunis Hilton, where they had set up a little black and white television on which at 2:56 a.m., Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon,” she writes. “Afterwards, we headed outside to look up through the hot summer night at the never-again-the-same moon in the sky.”

Then, Dreyfus and her mom met a kind stranger in the lobby of their hotel.

“Well, it was when we returned to the lobby and that handsome, elegant stranger gave to me and each woman present a white rose to commemorate this historic evening. My mom, in something of a swoon, explained to me that this was not just any man; this was Sydney [sic] Poitier.”

At this time, Sidney Poitier was already a legend. He was 42 years old during the time of this encounter. He had also become the first African-American man to win the Best Actor Oscar.

“What a gesture. What a gentleman. Rest in peace,” Dreyfus says at the end of her tribute. Fans and friends continue to respond to the “Seinfeld” star’s incredible story.

“Wow. This is so beautiful,” Jessica St. Claire writes.

“Oh, wow. Thank you for sharing this story ❤️” Dr. Ayana Elizabeth Johnson says.

Good news for Sidney Poitier fans. The late Hollywood icon is also receiving his own documentary. According to Deadline, Apple is working on a film to highlight Poitier’s life in and out of the spotlight.

Oprah Winfrey is also going to be the executive producer of the project. Reginald Hudlin will be working alongside her as director of the film. While the news of the Apple Original Film comes after his death, Poitier’s documentary has been in the works for over a year.

“My honor to have loved him as a mentor. Friend. Brother. Confidant. Wisdom teacher. The utmost, highest regard and praise for his most magnificent, gracious, eloquent life. I treasured him. I adored him. He had an enormous would I will forever cherish,” Oprah Winfrey writes.
