Comedian Steve Martin is sharing with fans the story of his first time meeting Betty White in 1974: “I was elated.”

Everyone loves Betty White. The legendary comedian makes a lasting impression with fans and friends alike. Steve Martin is a member of the actress’ fan club, recently posting to Twitter the story of when they first met. We gotta admit, it’s pretty adorable.

Steve Martin and Betty White’s first meeting took place in 1974. This was at the beginning of Martin’s career, when he was the opening act for Linda Ronstadt.

“In 1974, I was an obscure opening act for Linda Ronstadt at the Troubadour in Los Angeles. Passing through the lobby before the show, I saw Betty White and her husband Allen Ludden waiting in line,” Martin tweets.

In the following tweet, Martin shares the sweet conversation between the pair.

“I loved Betty White, so I went up to them: ‘I’m so honored to meet you both.’ And then I said, ‘Isn’t Linda great?’ She said, ‘We came to see you.’ I said, ‘Why?’ ‘Because we heard you were funny.’ I was elated.”

Fans sing both White and Martin’s praises in the comments.

“Betty is a legend and so are you!!!!!!! Your delivery is as exacting as it ever was. Sharp, clear and precise with just the right amount of feeling,” one fan writes.

“What an awesome event in your life. I’m very happy Betty White & husband were there to see you. What an honor. You are very funny & I love you for that. Thanks” another adds.

There you have it! Betty White was a Steve Martin fan from the start. It is nice to see two legends supporting one another.

Sandra Bullock on Betty White

Steve Martin is not the only person who considers White a legend. Actress Sandra Bullock is in awe of White’s talent and personality. The two became co-stars working on the 2009 rom-com “The Proposal.”

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Bullock calls White a “loving, decent, optimistic, inclusive, hilarious human being.” She hopes that White spends her 100th birthday “the same way she has celebrated every day of her life: with humor, kindness and a vodka on ice, toasting to the fact that she’s a badass who has left us all in the dust.”

The comedian is celebrating her centennial birthday with a one-night-only movie screening. 100 Years Young – a Birthday Celebration is playing in select theaters on January 17, 2022. The 1 hour and 40-minute film showcases White’s extensive career, as well as includes cameos of some of her famous friends.
